Police Crack Down on Prostitution in Marathon Co.Submitted: 04/25/2013
Story By Kailey Burton

ROTHSCHILD - On the internet you can find everything from furniture to pets to illegal "adult services"... and it's all on the same website.

Police in the Wausau Area are cracking down on those peddling sex. Police in Rothschild found out just how easy it is to hire someone for sex. Last week officers made one arrest, but just ONE website is full of willing sex workers.

Undercover officers arrested Cosetta Burrell for theft and prostitution. She'd agreed over text message to provide sexual services for $200. She's just one of a long list of women in the Wausau area advertising online. Captain Jeremy Hunt with the Rothschild police, thinks he knows why.

"With the way the economy is and the drug problems in the local area people need to find money somehow and this is one way that people are finding money," said Hunt.

In 2011 four people were arrested in the Wausau area for prostitution through the same website. But not all the posters are actually breaking the law.

"In Marathon County there isn't anything set in place, right now, that says it's illegal to have an ‘escort service'," said Captain Hunt, "However if you go to backpage.com where the ads are posted it's very obvious on what type of activity is being involved in it."

Police caught Burrell when she inadvertently agreed to have sex with an undercover cop for money. Many of the postings on that website though, are for ‘companionship' and some even say, anything further that should happen is not part of the contract.
