MANITOWISH WATERS - This month, Manitowish Waters welcomes a Northwoods native as its newest Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.

Dave Karaffa grew up near Boulder Junction and graduated from Lakeland Union High School.

For more than a decade, he's called Manitowish Waters home.

"I've lived and worked here in Manitowish Waters for the last 11 years of my life. I worked at Little Bohemia Lodge for 14 years...It was an opportunity to help sell the town as opposed to one business," Karaffa says.

It's the third new director in under a year for Manitowish Waters.

Although the people have changed, what the area offers hasn't.

"Obviously, our 10-lake chain has been one of our biggest draws for as long as the town's been around. It's just a gorgeous natural scenic area. We're just trying to promote that and bring people here to show them what a great location it is," he said.

Karaffa says he's looking forward to better weather.

That's when the town's population can increase by about sevenfold from visitors.
