Marathon Co. jailers begin carrying stun guns after attackSubmitted: 04/03/2013
Story By The Associated Press

WAUSAU - Jailers in Marathon County have started carrying stun guns following an attack that injured two corrections officers, including one who remains hospitalized in intensive care.

Previously, officers carried only pepper spray because administrators feared inmates would take other weapons and use them against the jailers.

Thirty-six-year-old Julie Christiansen, of Kronwetter, was injured in last week's attack. The officer remains in ICU at Aspirus Wausau Hospital with head injuries.

The other officer injured in the attack was treated at the hospital and released.

An inmate accused in the attack has been moved to the Lincoln County Jail.

Marathon County officials say staffing levels and communication system failures at the jail were not a factor in the assault.
