Northwoods Girl Scouts Tackle Bullying Submitted: 03/22/2013

RHINELANDER - We hear more and more about bullying in schools every day. One local Girl Scout troop saw it was becoming a problem in their school. So they did something about it.

Junior Girl Scout Troop 7091 needed to do something to help the community to earn their teamwork badge. They wanted to tackle bullying.

"Because lots of it was going on and we just wanted to help prevent it," says Leah Shaver.

"It could happen at any age level. It doesn't just have to be the older kids. It can happen in kindergarten too," says Gabi Lawrey.

Together the girls wrote a screen play about a girl who is bullied. By the end of the project they had a video called "The Bully Diaries" that they could show to their younger classmates.

Each troop member has had their own experiences with bullies.

"I know I have been bullied. It has happened since, maybe, first or second grade," says Emma Beckman.

"This boy in my class, he bullied this girl a lot and it kind of got me a little upset because it was going on like every day," says Shaver.

"I know somebody who bullies people. She... I think she knows she's bullying people," says Lawrey.

The girls think they know why some kids might be scared to stand up for other kids to bullies.

"You always think, 'What if they come back and start bullying you'," says Lawrey.

But like their video shows, getting other people to stand up to a bully with you makes it easier. And they think it's worth taking the risk.

"They're all human beings, and they don't deserve to be bullied," says Beckman.

"I'm not scared. I know that it's right. Some people think they don't want to stick up for people because they'll get made fun of too. But if it's the right thing to do they should do it," says Shaver.

A lesson they hope their video teaches other kids.

Gogebic Taconite submits sampling plans Submitted: 06/19/2013

MADISON - Gogebic Taconite wants to move quickly to dig an iron mine in Ashland and Iron Counties.

This week, they submitted plans for the next step in the state's process.

The company is asking the DNR for permission to sample hundreds of thousands of tons of earth, part of a bulk sampling plan.

Gogebic Taconite also officially told the DNR it will seek a mining permit.

The DNR will tell Gogebic within two weeks whether it can go forward with the sampling.

USDA Merrill Service Center Relocates Submitted: 06/19/2013

MERRILL - Farmers in Lincoln and Langlade Counties may need to make a longer drive or call a different office for USDA services.

The Merrill Service Center will be temporarily split up between Rhinelander, Wausau, and Medford.

The Farm Service Agency will move to the Wausau Service Center and the Natural Resources Conservation Service will be relocated to the Rhinelander and Medford Centers.

These moves will last until further notice.

Newman High Schools received new solar panels Submitted: 06/19/2013

WAUSAU - A Wausau high school will go green to save money and teach students about energy conservation.

New solar panels will sit on top of the roof.

It will save Newman High School approximately $400 a year.

The W-P-S foundation donated the system as part of the SolarWise for school program.

It's an educational experience for the kids as well.

Woman with Alzheimer's found safe Submitted: 06/19/2013

WOOD COUNTY - A barking dog led searchers to a Wood County woman with Alzheimer's disease.

Just before five last night, a call came in saying the woman was missing from the 46-hundred block of Lynn Hill Road in Port Edwards township.

The woman was enrolled in the "Project Lifesaver" program, and was wearing a transmitter.

However, the battery had apparently gone dead, so searchers could not find her that way.

Medford man searches for photo of every Vietnam death from Wisconsin Submitted: 06/19/2013

MEDFORD - “Our goal is to find them all," says Bryce Kelley.

Kelley, a Medford resident, wants to find a picture of every Wisconsin soldier killed in Vietnam.

“I know that I will continue to work, and I have enlisted the help of many others that will continue to work until we find them all," he says.

Nearly 1,200 Wisconsinites’ names are etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington.

Woman killed when ATV goes over cliff Submitted: 06/19/2013

SAXON - A woman died when an ATV sailed over a cliff in Iron county.

Deputies got the call around seven last night about the ATV crash near Harbor Drive in Saxon.

The ATV did not make it around a corner on Harbor drive and traveled over the cliff, coming to rest on the beach.

A 42 year old woman who was a passenger on the ATV was dead at the scene.

Her 44 year old husband had been driving, and suffered severe injuries.

Forest Co. man gets jail for firing gun in house, pointing it at wife Submitted: 06/19/2013

CRANDON - The Forest County man who pointed a gun at his wife and fired a shot in their home will serve conditional jail time.

Forrest Schaller was originally charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide.

But today he agreed to a deal with the State. He pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering safety and felon possession of a firearm.

In exchange, the Court dropped the attempted homicide charge.

Schaller will serve one year in Forest County jail with work-release privileges. He'll be on probation for eight years.
