Thursday: Boys State Hoops begins; Girls Sect. SemisSubmitted: 03/04/2013

- The Boys State Basketball Tournament gets underway on Thursday. The area's two lone reps will meet in the Division 4 semifinals Thursday night in Madison.

Auburndale takes on Amherst. For Amherst - it's their second trip to state - the last time was in 1998. Their roster includes several players of the state championship football team, including Caleb Glennon - who was the starting quarterback in the title game. Auburndale is at state for the first time since 2004. The Apachees have only one loss this season and ranked 5th in the last coaches poll.


In girls hoops, Neman Catholic knocked off Goodman-Pembine in a D-5 Regional Final Saturday night in Wausau. The Cardinals will now face Phelps - one of the smallest schools in the state. Only 35 kids are enrolled their. Thursday night's section semifinal is in Antigo. We'll have more on the Phelps Knights tomorrow.

Other matchups include in Division 4, Marathon faces Colby at Wausau West High School. And Amherst takes on Oconto in Menasha. Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, Niellsville, and Owen-Withee are also in action Thursday night.
Sectional finals will be played on Saturday.

TOWN OF LITTLE RICE - We now know a Rhinelander man died in a UTV accident on Gobbler Lake Road in the town of Little Rice.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department tells us 52-year-old Richard Johnson died from injuries he suffered in the crash. Johnson apparently missed a curve and left the road.

It happened after 10:40 p.m. on Saturday.

RHINELANDER - Rural areas rely on volunteer fire departments to respond to emergencies.

That's the case in Oneida County.

The Rhinelander Fire Department is the only paid full time department in the County.

But it can be difficult for fire departments to draw more volunteers.

The Crescent Fire Department in Oneida County relies on 25 volunteers for an area that serves about 2,800 people.

They need more people to help.

MARATHON COUNTY - Police accuse a woman in Marathon County of driving drunk with kids in the car.

A Wausau trooper from Wisconsin State Patrol arrested 35 year old Jessica Poetsch from Waukesha for her 4th OWI. It happened Sunday night, around 8 in the evening. There were 2 children in the car at the time of her arrest.

Son shoots father in hunting accidentSubmitted: 09/22/2014

MARATHON COUNTY - A boy shot his father in a hunting accident in Marathon County.

Police say the 11 year old boy was hunting for turkeys with his father and two other relatives. The boy mistook his father for a turkey on Sunday and shot him in the upper left area of his chest.

The man was flown to an area hospital and was believed to be stable Sunday night.
