Northwoods Spotlight: Merrill Sled Dogs (Feb 6)Submitted: 02/06/2013
Story By Marisa Silvas

MERRILL - In Merrill Last weekend, was the annual Cool Running Sled Dog Race.

Marisa Silvas introduces us to this 'dog-gone' event.

George Matos, one of the mushers who competed says, "You have to have confidence in them and they have to have confidence in you."

"The dogs are athletes," adds Rom Behm another musher.

Steve Wilcenski believes the event is so unique that, "...it should be on everyone's bucket list."

Many of us have furry friends at home. But chances are, they're not in shape like these guys. Over 200 sled dogs were competing in Merrill last weekend.

Typical breeds for sled dogs are huskies, pointers and hounds. These 4 legged friends start training for race season in the fall.

In sprint racing, as a general rule, mushers travel a mile per dog.
