Nordic Skiing stays in Rhinelander; Crandon wins in boys hoopsSubmitted: 01/31/2013

RHINELANDER, CRANDON - Some good news for the Rhinelander Nordic Ski Club. Wednesday's snowfall saved the upcoming Nordic Ski Championships.

Earlier this week, the Northwood Ski Trails had very little snow. In fact, race officials were considering moving the Championships out of Rhinelander.

But thanks to over 5 inches of snow - it's staying put. Race Director Ron Techlaw is releived Mother Nature was able to help. Now it's about getting ready for next weekend's event.

Meanwhile, the Crandon boys basketball team took a huge step closer to securing the Northern Lakes Conference Championship.


Crandon defeated Laona/Wabeno 57-51 Thursday night in Crandon. With the victory, Crandon remains undefeated in conference play. They currently hold a two game lead over Laona/Wabeno with four games remaining.

Adam Flannery led the Cardinals with a game-high 23 points. Kory Kincaid added 14 points.

Zach Reeves was the leading scorer for Laona/Wabeno with 15 points. Logan Chrisman added 14 points for the Rebels.

MADISON - 55 people in Wisconsin died last year from domestic violence.

The organization End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin looked at the numbers.

They found about one person every week died from domestic violence in 2013.

39 of the deaths were homicide victims.

12 abusers took their own lives.

FAA: 2 weeks to reopen Chicago-area control centerSubmitted: 09/29/2014

CHICAGO - The Federal Aviation Administration says it will take about two weeks to fully reopen a Chicago-area control center where an act of sabotage brought the city's two international airports to a halt last week.

The FAA said Sunday it hopes to return the facility to full service by Oct. 13.

Authorities say a contract employee started a fire Friday at regional control center in suburban Aurora and then attempted to commit suicide. More than 2,000 flights were canceled that day at O'Hare and Midway international airports, disrupting travel nationwide.

LAC DU FLAMBEAU - Retiring in the Northwoods can be a great option for some people.

A local college wants to serve the community by offering classes for retirees.

Nicolet College's Learning in Retirement program offers everything from science classes to a tour of the WJFW studio.

"Learning is something, it becomes a passion to people. They've experienced it all through their lives. But it doesn't stop, we believe, at retirement," says Learning in Retirement past president Edward Lee.

Students in the Learning in Retirement program had the chance to learn more about Ojibwe culture.

RHINELANDER - The Ebola virus may seem to be a world away... but people right here in the Northwoods are helping to fight it.

Wise Intentional Leadership Development, otherwise known as WILD, is doing their part to raise money. The Rhinelander based group began training and developing young people in Africa in 2001.

"Our primary purpose, mission is to offer leadership development with a Christian perspective and really focus on the youth, cause over half the population in Africa is 25 and younger," explains WILD Executive Director Mike Prom. "So if we can help develop the youth, we can help change Africa."

UW Extension will offer free internet marketing training to some Northwoods small businesses.

Small business owners and employees from Oneida, Vilas, Bayfield and Ashland counties can participate in the training.

Cranberry crop estimated at 5.3 million barrels; still a surplus in the marketSubmitted: 09/29/2014

WISCONSIN - Cranberry growers don't expect another unprecedented harvest, but the industry does expect to keep Wisconsin's cranberry crown.

Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association Executive Director Tom Lochner says the state should produce 5.3 million barrels of cranberries from the 2014 harvest. Lochner says a barrel holds 100 pounds of cranberries.

The state produced 5.8 million barrels in 2013. Lochner credits the weather in September 2013 for that large harvest.
