Online Rummage Sales A New Option for Northwoods Buyers, SellersSubmitted: 01/30/2013

RHINELANDER - In the Northwoods, the traditional rummage sale season ends when the weather turns cold.

But it's a different story on your computer, where at least three Northwoods online rummage sale pages are going strong.

Chris Hawley and her wife like to go to garage sales in the summer.

To buy and sell, Chris also tried Craigslist, but found it was too hard to use in a rural area.

So instead, she tried the Facebook pages targeted at local online rummage sales.

"I started buying some things on it, and I noticed how easy it was to buy them, so I thought, well, I might as well start selling some things," she says.

She has looked at selling everything from her son's shoes to her boat.

The Rhinelander, Oneida County, and Northwoods online rummage sales have thousands of users.

Anybody can join and use the free service.

Compared to Craigslist, Chris says it's a better option.

"It seems to be a lot faster. It's a smaller audience. A lot of times it's people you end up knowing. You come and meet them, and it's like, hey, I've seen you before," she says.

Data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows the state has had nearly 940 confirmed flu cases, compared to nearly 180 at the same point of last year's flu season.

NORTHWOODS - Friday's snowstorm will keep student athletes on edge during their playoff games over the weekend. 

The girls' basketball playoffs continue on Friday, but if schools cancel games it could cause some problems on the court.

Lakeland is scheduled to play Mosinee at home on Friday.

If school gets canceled, Friday's game would move to Saturday and the regional final game would move to Sunday.

This leaves players with one fewer day to prepare for the sectional finals.

EAGLE RIVER - A volunteer team that backs up emergency responders hoped someone would donate a generator for their new mobile canteen trailer.  They just never expected that donation to come in so soon.

Salvation Army Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) area coordinator Paul Clay fired up his new Generac generator Thursday afternoon.

Barbara Ann Just from Boulder Junction heard about Clay's need after Newswatch 12 ran a story on SATERN receiving the canteen trailer donation.  Just called to offer enough money to buy the generator that night.
