New Trial Denied in Notorious Wisconsin MurderSubmitted: 01/30/2013
Story By Associated Press

MADISON - A state appeals court has rejected a new trial for a man convicted in one of Wisconsin's most notorious murders.

Brendan Dassey was sentenced to life with no parole eligibility for 41 years in a Manitowoc County murder.

He was convicted in 2007 of first-degree murder, second-degree sexual assault, and mutilation of a corpse in the killing of Teresa Halbach.

The killing got extraordinary attention, because another man involved had previously been wrongly convicted of rape.

Dassey's uncle Steven Avery, had spent 18 years in prison before DNA evidence freed him.

After he got out, Avery lured Halbach to a salvage yard, where she was killed.

Dassey's defense attorneys argued that police coerced his confession and that his trial attorneys were ineffective.

The 2nd District Court of Appeals rejected those arguments today, upholding Dassey's convictions.
