Antigo School Board meeting highlights middle school programSubmitted: 01/29/2013
Story By Hayley Tenpas

ANTIGO - Students in Antigo got the day off due to bad weather, but not everything was cancelled.

The Unified School District of Antigo School Board met tonight, highlighting some good in the district.

A before and after school program at the middle school gives students extra time with their teachers, and also throws in some fun activities.

It has 111 students participating.

Many of them are now excelling in the classroom.

"We've had an at least 10-15 percent increase in math scores, and in grades. Our fluency which was just basic math facts has increased almost 40 percent," said Middle School President Doug Knol.

The program is funded through the 21st Century Learning grant.

Also on the agenda tonight was approving the retirement of Middle School Principal Doug Knol.

He ends his 21 years of service on June 30th.

"Well I'll tell you what, it was not an easy decision, I really enjoy doing what I'm doing. But I thought it was time for me to go, and I've really enjoyed it. It's been a wonderful place," said Knol.
