Player of the Week Nominees for January 28 Submitted: 01/28/2013

THE NORTHWOODS - We're fewer than two weeks away from regional and sectional competition for the Winter sports. Many high school athletes are stepping up their game when it counts. Here are the latest nominees for Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

Nominee 1 -

In girls hockey, Marshfield's Paige Johnson had a great game last Thursday against Tomahawk. Johnson had 2 goals and three assists in the Tigers 9-2 victory over the Hatchets. She also leads the conference in points with 21.

Nominee 2 -

Antigo senior Maura Boodry had a strong showing at the Red Robin Gymnastics Invite on Saturday. Maura placed 2nd in bars and 4th in vault, which led to a second place finish in the All Around. Boodry's performance helped Antigo take 1st place in the 9 team competition.

Nominee 3 -

On the mat, Wausau West's Joe Umlauf captured the 132 pound title at the Pulaski Invite. Joe is top ranked in division one at 138 pounds and his dominating win helped West take the team title out of 16 schools competing.

Nominee 4 -

And in boys basketball, Clayton Grose scored 17 points for Elcho last Friday. The 6'5'' senior helped lead the Hornets to a 52-39 victory over Northern Lakes conference foe Goodman-Pembine.

WI Defendants Hit Sentencing Delays Submitted: 05/26/2013

RACINE - Wisconsin defendants waiting to be sentenced are having to wait several weeks longer to learn their sentences.

Corrections officials cite two reasons for the delays _ too few probation agents to conduct pre-sentence investigation reports, and stricter requirements in the reports that take longer to complete.

A Journal Times of Racine report says in 1997 the Department of Corrections implemented a three-week turnaround to complete the reports. But DOC spokeswoman Lisa Yeates says it's become difficult to meet that deadline.

She says the reports can now take six to eight weeks. That's because they have to include the results of a risk-assessment tool, making the reports 20 pages or longer.

The public defender's Racine office says the delay hurts defendants who end up being sentenced to time served.

19th Annual Main Street and Memories Car Show Honor Memorial Day Submitted: 05/26/2013

TOMAHAWK - The 19th Annual Main Street and Memories Car Show gave hundreds of proud car owners a chance to show off to thousands of spectators.

"It seems like it’s a really good turn out. There’s a lot of different vehicles here to look at," said Wausau resident, Cody Opper.

"All different kinds of models and makes, so I think it really turned out nice. It’s a good show."

"We try to take in five or six a year and this is probably the one we like the best," Merrill resident Gary Dietrich said.

Alcohol-Related Boating Deaths Up in Wisconsin Submitted: 05/26/2013

MADISON - Wisconsin had the nation's third-highest number of alcohol-related boating deaths last year.

That was the same year a legislative bill to stiffen penalties on drunken boaters fell flat.

Intoxicated boating killed eight people in the state last year.

The failed legislation would have banned a person from driving a boat for at least a year after a drunken-boating offense.

Lawmakers think the bill may have a better chance if it's reintroduced this summer.

Garage Burns Down In Merrill Submitted: 05/26/2013

MERRILL - A Saturday afternoon fire burned a garage to the ground.

It happened just after one o'clock on Anna Road in Merrill.

Police say say they could see smoke from miles away.

It took crews from Merrill, Russell, Pine River and the DNR to get the fire under control.

The homeowner said he and his wife started a fire in a burn barrel behind the garage hours before.

The garage was totally destroyed along with everything inside.

The fire is still being investigated.

One Week Left to Sign up for Conservation Stewardship Program Submitted: 05/26/2013

MADISON - Wisconsin's farmers and ranchers have less than a week to sign up for the federal Conservation Stewardship Program.

The voluntary program provides financial and technical help to eligible farmers and ranchers who conserve and enhance soil, water, air and related natural resources on their land.

Friday is the deadline to sign up.

The stewardship program is run by the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service. Participants receive annual payments for installing and adopting conservation activities and improving, maintaining and managing existing activities.

They can also get supplemental payments for adopting resource-conserving crop rotations.

More than 39,000 farmers and ranchers participated between 2009 and 2012. They enrolled over 50 million acres of farm and ranch land and received conservation payments worth $680 million a year.

Town of Woodruff Celebrates 60th Million Penny Parade Submitted: 05/25/2013

WOODRUFF - A million pennies might not go a long way today, but in the 1950’s it helped build a hospital in Woodruff.

Saturday was about celebrating a woman with a big idea.

"It’s a special celebration this year and so we just wanna help Woodruff celebrate." said Hazelhurst resident, Faye Tenhaken.

"It was awesome. I loved it. All the kids, I had a ton of my nieces and nephews with me and they loved it too." Arbor Vitae resident, Amber Kazlausky said.

Verdict in Raw Milk Trial Submitted: 05/25/2013

BARABOO - A Wisconsin dairy farmer has been acquitted on three of four counts in a trial related to the sale of raw milk.

Dairy farmer Vernon Hershberger was found guilty on one charge of violating a holding order placed on products at his farm. This was after a 2010 raid.

Hershberger could get up to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine.

They found the 41-year-old not guilty of charges that he sold retail food, produced milk and operated a dairy plant without proper state licenses.

His supporters have said he was targeted because he sold raw milk through a private buying club with several hundred members.
