Four Rest Area Maintenance Employees Received AwardsSubmitted: 01/23/2013

RHINELANDER - Four young men won an award today.

They were awarded for their hard work with keeping our roadside rest areas clean and landscaped.

Rehabilitation For Wisconsin handed out the award.

The program provides employment for people with disabilities.

The four supervisors honored train 14 other individuals on custodial and landscape maintenance throughout Oneida, Vilas, Forest and Lincoln counties.

Part of the award was dedicated to co-worker Eric Harrison.

Eric died this past Monday after an accident on Friday.

RHINELANDER - The DNR wants your input regarding a proposed area ATV trail.

A public open house will be held August 19th at the Northwoods Community Elementary School in Harshaw.

People will have the chance to talk about the proposed trail for a portion of the Woodboro Lakes Wildlife Area.

The Nokomis ATV Club has asked for an ATV trail to be added across the southeast portion of the wildlife area.

MADISON - Some Wisconsin school districts worry about Governor Scott Walker's recent move away from Common Core educational standards.

Walker has asked the Wisconsin Legislature to pass a bill in January to repeal Common Core.

He wants to replace it with standards set by the public.

Common Core is the set of curriculum standards that specify what is taught in grade-school classrooms throughout the state.

EAGLE RIVER - Vilas County Judge Neal Nielsen sometimes feels rushed while in the courtroom.

The large number of cases he needs to hear requires the court calendar to keep moving.

That number of cases has steadily increased over the last several years.

That's why Nielsen is pushing for a second judge in Vilas County.

"Judge need" is measured by a statistic called weighted case load.

Reconstruction of Hwy 51, Hwy 47 intersection pushed back to 2018Submitted: 07/29/2014

WOODRUFF - Construction on the intersection of Highway 51 and Highway 47 in Woodruff will be pushed back to 2018. The project was supposed to start in 2017.

That's because DOT supervisors aren't sure how they want to reconstruct the road yet. They're looking at a few different design plans right now.

Project leaders want to make sure they pick the safest option. They also want more community input before they make a decision.

Three Lakes Mercantile and General Store opened up earlier this summer.

One person dead after being pulled from lakeSubmitted: 07/29/2014

WOODRUFF - Woodruff police want to know what happened to a person who died after ending up in the water.

The Woodruff Police Department was called to Indian Mounds boat landing about 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Two DNR rangers there had pulled an unconscious male from the lake.

Medical personnel at the scene told officers the victim had died, and the coroner was called.

An autopsy will be performed.

No name will be released until the victim is positively identified.

Hwy 51 closed near IrmaSubmitted: 07/29/2014

LINCOLN COUNTY - Wisconsin State Patrol shut down Highway 51 South near Irma Tuesday afternoon.

An SUV hit a semi around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. No one was seriously hurt.

Traffic going south was rerouted while traffic going north was fine.
