MERRILL - Merrill's dogs want a place to stretch their legs.

But until now, there hasn't been a dog park near the city.

That's about to change due to some extra money from the city.

"It's something that quite a few community members have taken interest in, and have wanted to see in our community for quite a few years. It wasn't until recently that the idea has gained some traction," says Dan Wendorf, the Merrill Park and Recreation Director.

The Park and Recreation Department was given $12,500 in the city budget to build the dog park.

The site could be the Merrill Area Recreation Complex on Merrill's far west side.

Some others of the city's many parks are under consideration as well.

Most of the money will first go to fencing.

Then, dog agility equipment will be added once more money comes in.

The department hopes to open the park in late summer.
