Lac du Flambeau Tribe Hosts Economic Development SummitSubmitted: 01/16/2013
Story By Hayley Tenpas

LAC DU FLAMBEAU - A local tribe wants to lead the way for job creation.

The Tribal Economic Development Summit was hosted by the Lac du Flambeau tribe.

This was the first year of the summit.

Their goal- to provide discussion and bridge the gap between tribal and state leaders.

"What we wanted to do is get people to gather, to discuss strategies for building relationships and moving towards building businesses and job creation together," said Brandon Thoms, executive assistant of the Business and Economic Development Office for the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

Attendees listened to speakers and participated in roundtable discussion.

Event organizers were happy to see ideas from the tribes and state leaders.

"I think we've got six or seven tribal representatives from the eleven tribes in Wisconsin, [that] are here. We have state- Madison from the regional economic development people. We've got people that have come from all over the state for this," said Lac du Flambeau tribe business development director Brent McFarland.

The two day summit wraps up this afternoon.

The tribe hopes to host additional summits at different Wisconsin locations throughout the year.
