Northwoods Spotlight: Youth Outdoor Hockey Tourney 1-9Submitted: 01/09/2013
Story By Marisa Silvas

MANITOWISH WATERS - One hundred youth hockey players traveled to Manitowish Waters for competition and a fun filled weekend. But Marisa Silvas found out - this tournament is played outside.

Groomed Ice, Fresh Air and Hockey. The scene was set for the second annual North Lakeland Outdoor Winter Classic.

Last weekend six area squirt teams took part in this unique opportunity.

"The parents love it, " said Chuck Benson - the President of North Lakeland Hockey Association. "The kids are exicted. It's a different thing for them."

For the adults, it was a chance to get back to their roots.

"It was a step back in time," adds Nate Bunnell - D.C. Everest Coach. "I was excited to get up here. These kids have never experienced something like this before."

"The fresh air gives you more energy and stuff," said Quinn Stack of the D.C. Everest squirt team.

While the kids are enjoying playing outdoors... the environment does provide many challenges.

SOTS-
Rhinelander coach Joe Pequet says, "The ice is alot harder. The puck bounces alot. Many times, it's not in our favor."

Bill Guelcher - Lakeland Coach
"You come out here and it's kinda cold," adds Max Toyjala of the Lakeland Squirt Team. "You don't know what to do and stuff."

But the elements didn't stop everyone from having a great time.

I bet you haven't seen a trophy quite like this. the Buck Cup was awarded to Rhinelander after the Hodags won the championship game.
