RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander Oneida County Airport seemed to have a revolving door of providers. But after more than a year, the staff hopes to have finally found one to stay. Today, Northwoods travelers took to the skies with Sky West-Delta today.

In 2011 Frontier Airlines announced it wanted to end service here. But the Department of Transportation wouldn't let them leave the airport without a replacement.

"And since then we've been actually seeking for another carrier to go under the Essential Air Service program. In other words, they get subsidized from flying into Rhinelander to a hub of such. And Sky West Airlines that is doing business as a Delta connection actually put a bid in and was awarded that bid from the Department of Transportation," says Airport Director Joe Brauer.

Brauer says the new airline offers more options for passengers.

"From here they'll fly to Minneapolis. From Minneapolis they can go any place they want basically throughout the United States and all the International markets that they serve. This is going to be a much more convenient, again, you know one flight from here to Minneapolis and another flight basically to your destination," says Brauer.

Delta will have two flights in and out of Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport every day.

Brauer says the response has been great so far. The first flights today were about half full.

Joey Balocca didn't know his life would change when he got on his motorcycle to drive home last summer.

"It was about 10:30 at night. I was coming home from my girlfriend's birthday. Then, out of nowhere a suburban pulled out and hit me head on. It came right into my lane," says Balocca. "My leg was basically crushed between my bike and the suburban."
