- 2013 is just around the corner. Last week, several holdiay tournaments were held not only in the Northwoods - but throughout the state.

Here are our nominees for the Newswatch 12 Player of the Week.

In Boys basketball, the Hodags went 2-0 at the Big Rivers - Wisconsin Valley Challenge in Wausau. Rhinelander's Shane White scored 26 points in the Hodags' victory over Menominee.


In wrestling, Merrill's Mason Reinhardt showed why he is the top-ranked wrestler in the state at 160 pounds. Mason went undefeated in the Bluejays Northern Exposure Tourney. Merrill went on to win the team title.

In girls hockey, the Northern Edge finished second in their annual Hodagland Tournament. Lauren Smith scored 3 goals in two games - both victories for the Edge.

Back to boys basketball, Elcho went 2-0 in their Hornet Holiday Tourney... Jaeger Adams - who made the all-tournament team - led Elcho with a dozen points in a 1-point victory over Bowler.

Wisconsin DNR encourages composting Submitted: 10/21/2014

MADISON - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants homeowners to compost or mulch fallen leaves. This will help keep the leaves out of landfills and lower the chances of burning piles.

DNR leaders say composting means more room and landfill and less chance of stray sparks from burning piles that can start wildfires.

Fewer burning piles will also helps maintain a high level of air quality.

RHINELANDER - School districts in the Northwoods hope state legislators will change the way local public schools are funded.

Right now, the school funding formula hurts property-rich, but income-poor, districts like Rhinelander.

Rhinelander administrators warn if Madison doesn't make a funding change, they face cutting programs or asking voters for more money through a referendum.

Two car crash sends 2 to hospitalSubmitted: 10/20/2014

WOODRUFF - A car driving the wrong way on Highway 47 west of Woodruff hit another car this morning.

An 86-year-old Lac du Flambeau man was driving south in the northbound lane.

He hit a car driven by an 87-year-old woman.

The man and his passenger, an 87-year-old woman, were taken to Howard Young Medical Center.

Their injuries aren't life threatening.

Rhinelander Winter Farmers Market to Open SaturdaySubmitted: 10/20/2014

RHINELANDER - One local group wants to make sure you can get fresh local produce even during the winter.

The Lean Coalition is partnering with the YMCA of the Northwoods for a new indoor winter farmers market. The Hodag Farmers market closed on Saturday.

Community helping pick new president for Nicolet College Submitted: 10/20/2014

RHINELANDER - Nicolet College will need to find a new president. Taxes in the community help pay for some of the school's budget. That's why the school wants to turn to the community before filling the position.

Monday night they heard from the community at a meeting.

Some people want to make sure the candidates have good backgrounds. They also want the board to do their research, but some don't want students left out.

David Hubbard of Harshaw thought it would be a perfect opportunity to learn more about the school. However, he also wanted to make sure students could participate in the process.

Man dies in tractor rolloverSubmitted: 10/20/2014

TOWN OF WILTON - A 66-year-old Kendall man is dead after a tractor accident in Monroe County.

Sheriff Peter Quirin says the accident happened Sunday evening on a farm in the Town of Wilton.

The driver of the tractor was compacting silage when the tractor rolled over, killing him.

The sheriff's office identifies the victim as Gale Burkhalter.

A room tax is an extra tax placed on overnight stays.

Lodges and resorts in the City of Rhinelander and Town of Pelican collect room tax.

Now you may be able to get some of that money.
