Slick Roads Cause Car-Semi Truck Crash on Highway 47 Submitted: 12/28/2012
RHINELANDER - One look outside Friday night and you can tell the roads are rather slick.

Snow flurries started falling in the Northwoods early this afternoon and winds pushed a lot of that snow around.

That made for some treacherousdriving in the viewing area, including on Highway 47 Friday night.

Around 6 p.m. Newswatch 12 got a report of a car and semi crash on Highway 47 near Newbold.

We didn't make it out to the scene in time, but we did run into the driver of the car afterward: Pam Miller from Boulder Junction.

Miller says she was on her way to work driving toward Minocqua when her cell phone rang.

"My boss was calling me and I looked away for just one second," Miller said. "There was a car stopped in front of me and I went around the car and I t-boned a semi.

And if I didn't go around the car, there was a little girl and a dad that I probably would have killed. And if I didn't have my seatbelt on like I normally don't, I would've got killed too."

Miller thinks she was only going about 40 miles per hour at the time. She says the semi truck driver and people in the car she almost hit weren't hurt. They were the ones who called police.

"Wear your seatbelt and don't answer your phone, even for your boss," Miller said.

The slick roads also caused a multi-car crash on Highway 51 and County N near Tomahawk around 8 p.m. No one was injured in that crash either.

Ministry Health Care to Cut Hundreds of Jobs Submitted: 05/22/2013

MILWAUKEE - Ministry Health Care plans to lay off several hundred employees, citing a drop in the number of patients and cuts in federal reimbursement levels.

Ministry operates 15 hospitals and 47 clinics across Wisconsin.

The facilities include Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Ministry spokesman Geoffrey Huys says about 225 to 250 employees will be cut, mainly through attrition and job eliminations.

RHINELANDER - Rhinelander needs new businesses to fill empty stores downtown.

This past weekend 26 properties had an open house. It was organized by Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. (DRI) and Flanders Reality Group. Finding the right home for a business can be hard. But the event tried to help those on the hunt.

"This way, you know, your here, you look, your able to talk to someone who knows the property. And you can really make a really good decision right now today," said Maggie Steffen, DRI Executive Director.

National Geography Bee Finalist Submitted: 05/22/2013

WASHINGTON - Local geography whiz Asha Jain made the final round of the National Geography Bee in Washington today. But fell just short of the title.

Jain from Minocqua passed the preliminary round of 54 contestants on Monday. The final round of 10 was this morning.

The contestants are competing for a 25-thousand dollar scholarship and trip to the Galapagos Islands. Jain finished in the top six.

The title clinching question: "Because the earth bulges at the equator, which mountain peak on the earth is farthest from the earth’s center?"

Tougher Requirements Wanted for Recalls Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - A group of Wisconsin town officials want the state to raise requirements for recalling local officials.

Voters can now launch a recall effort for any reason related to the person's official responsibilities.

A bill has been introduced by Republican Representative Alvin Ott of Forest Junction.

It would require that the official be charged with committing a crime or committing an ethics violation before a recall could happen.

Gov. Walker calls for nearly $13 million to boost walleye production Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - Gov. Scott Walker has announced a nearly $13 million effort to boost walleye production.

The plan calls for $8.2 million in borrowing authority to expand hatcheries, $1.8 million for operating expenses over the next two fiscal years and $2 million for grants for private organizations to expand walleye production.

The plan also includes money for the University of Wisconsin Extension to continue aquaculture work, acquiring walleye fingerlings from organizations and expanding a program that gives tribal youth the chance to work on natural resources-related projects.
