Arno Sparkles, but Hodag Icers Fall Again Submitted: 12/13/2012
RHINELANDER - Jake Arno stopped 26 of 27 shots between the pipes, but Lakeland used a big first period to down the Hodags boys hockey team 4-1 at the Rhinelander Ice Arena Thursday night.

Arno stepped in after the first intermission. Alex Littleton had allowed three first-period goals to the Thunderbirds in the opening 17 minutes. Despite the loss, the Rhinelander coaching staff was pleased with Arno's effort.

"That's a bright spot for us tonight, to face 27 shots and turn back 26 of them," assistant coach Wil Losch said. "It's good for his confidence. He's had some frustrations, and he has high expectations of himself."

This was a matchup of winless Great Northern Conference teams. Lakeland left RIA at 4-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the GNC. The Hodags dropped to 0-7-0, 0-3-0.

Bobby Estabrook put home the lone Rhinelander goal near the start of the third period from the slot, picking up assists from Lucas Fix and Bryce Luebke. That made it 3-1.

But Lakeland's explosive opening session proved the difference. Thunderbird leading scorer Nik Boyer, as well as junior Jack Dern, netted unassisted goals. Jason Anderson also chipped in a score.
Rhinelander could have made up ground in the middle period, but wasn't with it.

"It was a really poor period, maybe one of the worst periods we've had this year," Losch said. "We did a poor job anticipating. When we had guys that didn’t have the puck, they're just not thinking a step ahead."

The Hodags were in a particularly tough situation when Estabrook and Chris Hagen committed simultaneous minor penalties for tripping and interference, respectively, with 28 seconds left in the second. But the Hodags killed Lakeland's two-man advantage that spanned between the second and third. That sparked an encouraging final 17 minutes for Rhinelander.

The Hodags now hit the road for a non-conference test at Merrill on Saturday. It should be the best chance for a win yet this year.

"They're kind of in the same boat as us. They're a young team, a small roster. I think we're going to match up real well with them," Losch said. "It certainly is a winnable game, but we have to go in there and play real strong. If we play like we did tonight, it's not winnable."

Merrill enters the game at 0-5-0 on the season.

Gogebic Taconite submits sampling plans Submitted: 06/19/2013

MADISON - Gogebic Taconite wants to move quickly to dig an iron mine in Ashland and Iron Counties.

This week, they submitted plans for the next step in the state's process.

The company is asking the DNR for permission to sample hundreds of thousands of tons of earth, part of a bulk sampling plan.

Gogebic Taconite also officially told the DNR it will seek a mining permit.

The DNR will tell Gogebic within two weeks whether it can go forward with the sampling.

MERRILL - We want our city officials to save money and resources where they can.

In Merrill, the city council is trying to do that with their municipal court.

The new plan means if you get a speeding ticket or citation for disorderly conduct in tomahawk, you'd have to go to court in Merrill.

The timetable is quicker for getting in and out of the municipal court than getting through Lincoln County Circuit Court.

The discussion came up when Merrill's city staff members decided they need to make a decision whether to continue funding the court.

TOMAHAWK - Workers at Daigle Brothers in Tomahawk can build almost anything out of steel. Most of their business is creating custom parts and putting up buildings, but more recently, they've been building a new invention.

Daigle Brothers began in 1987. Back then they did a lot of construction related jobs like painting. Later they focused on steel construction.

"In the 90's we did a lot of school buildings, there was a lot of schools being built, so we supplied structural steel for these building projects... Currently our biggest markets are universities, hospitals, office buildings... we do a lot of fire stations," said Steve Daigle President of Daigle Brothers Inc.

Woman with Alzheimer's found safe Submitted: 06/19/2013

WOOD COUNTY - A barking dog led searchers to a Wood County woman with Alzheimer's disease.

Just before five last night, a call came in saying the woman was missing from the 46-hundred block of Lynn Hill Road in Port Edwards township.

The woman was enrolled in the "Project Lifesaver" program, and was wearing a transmitter.

However, the battery had apparently gone dead, so searchers could not find her that way.

Forest Co. man gets jail for firing gun in house, pointing it at wife Submitted: 06/19/2013

CRANDON - The Forest County man who pointed a gun at his wife and fired a shot in their home will serve conditional jail time.

Forrest Schaller was originally charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide.

But today he agreed to a deal with the State. He pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering safety and felon possession of a firearm.

In exchange, the Court dropped the attempted homicide charge.

Schaller will serve one year in Forest County jail with work-release privileges. He'll be on probation for eight years.

ANTIGO - Cars, ATVs and snowmobiles can take you to nearly any destination in the Northwood’s.

But without the steam-engine locomotive, many of those spots wouldn’t be on the map.

Joe Hermolin, Langlade County Historic Society president, said at one point in Antigo's history, half of the town worked for the railroad.

“They would ship out wood products and eventually farm goods," Hermolin said. "It used to all come through Antigo.”

TOWN OF UNITY, WI - An elderly man from central Wisconsin killed in a terrifying crash when a train crashes into his van.

Charles Podbelsek, 81, was driving on a Clark County Road Tuesday morning.

When he approached the railroad crossing he did not stop at the stop sign and hit a Canadian National train.

His Caravan was thrown from the crossing, landed on its roof, and Podbelsek was thrown from the van.
