WPS Sends More Crews East To Help With SandySubmitted: 12/03/2012

RHINELANDER - More help from Wisconsin arrived out east for Hurricane Sandy victims.

This time it'll help restore natural gas to customers.

WPS crews arrived in Long Island City, NY Sunday night and will be there for 14 days.

There's around 10,000 customers still without gas service in New Jersey.

Leah Van Zile says this is the second group of workers WPS sent.

"In order for people to get their gas services back reconnected - appliances need to be checked for safety, piping needs to be checked for safety, pilot lights have to be re-lit," Van Zile said.

"If we find, or the employee finds that it's not safe to light the appliance a tag has to be placed so corrections can be made."

WPS will join utility companies from all over the U.S. there.

Van Zile says WPS helping out shows a sense of unity among utility companies.

"When utilities do have crisis, in their area, they can put out a regional call for assistance or a national call for assistance," Van Zile said.

"Time really always has been of the essence. As a utility company, we just really want to do what we can to help out our neighbors and our sister utility companies."

Van Zile says no local services will be affected during the time these crews are out there.
