RHINELANDER - Wisconsin's hunting numbers have been on the decline in recent years and now the DNR wants to find new ways to get you into the woods.

The DNR's recruitment effort focuses on non-traditional hunters to enjoy the state's outdoor sports, many for the first time.

Part of the plan begins right before the start of gun deer season so you can have a chance at bagging a buck...for only a few out of your wallet.

DNR Wildlife Biologist Jeremy Holtz says, "One of the things they decided that they could try is reducing the fee. So for people that have never bought a license before or for people that have been out of hunting for at least ten years. This year they can buy a license, any kind of license for just five dollars."

This reduced price for first timers and those returning to the outdoors also includes fishing, small game and trapping for many animals.

Holtz says just because the permits are cheap, doesn't mean you can skip on the rules and regulations, "It's important to note that it's a recognition for first time hunters and it's an opportunity to save money but they still have to meet all the other legal requirements including firearms safety."

Plus current hunters or fishermen who recruit three people to purchase a permit for the first time are eligible to receive discounted permits for themselves.

These reduced rates also apply for non-residents so if you have friends or family in another state you can invite them over to try Wisconsin's great outdoors.
