State Super. Evers Proposes $615 Million Increase in State Aid Submitted: 11/12/2012

MADISON - State superintendent Tony Evers wants to increase state aid for schools by $615 million.

At the same time, he wants to redo the formula used to determine how much money each district gets.

Evers toured the Merrill district back in October and told us how the plan would benefit some districts, including those in the Northwoods that get less state aid because they have high property tax value, but struggle with high poverty levels.

"We need to take a look at changing the funding system so that it reflects the poverty, it doesn't make property wealth the surrogate for how much money people have in their pocket," he said. "It will redistribute the funds towards poorer school districts and it will tend to move away from the property value of the district, and more on how much people earn."

No school would lose aid under Evers' plan.

Evers first introduced the plan two years ago.

He said it had bipartisan support, but didn't go through because of the division created by Act 10.

Now, the plan will have to be approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Scott Walker before it would take effect.

Evers said he's confident the plan will make it through this time.

Man Accused of Lac du Flambeau Stabbing in Custody Submitted: 05/21/2013

LAC DU FLAMBEAU - James Peterson, 30, will be charged with stabbing a man in Lac du Flambeau over the weekend.

Peterson is accused of stabbing a 19-year-old man early Sunday morning.

It happened on Longs Point Lane in Lac du Flambeau.

The victim had been stabbed in the leg with a knife.

Peterson was also injured.

Bonduel police were called to a wreck on north First street shortly after noon yesterday.

A car had slammed into a tree.

A 75 year old man riding in the car was pronounced dead at the Shawano Medical Center.

MADISON - Home sales in Wisconsin keep growing.

New numbers show April was the 22nd consecutive month of growth.

Sales were up 9 percent compared to April of last year.

The median price for existing homes rose 8 percent.

For the northern region of the state, sales were up five percent in April.
