33rd Annual Cranberry Fest Set To GoSubmitted: 10/05/2012
EAGLE RIVER - It's another busy weekend in the Northwoods.

More than 40,000 people and 325 Vendors close in on Eagle River this weekend.

The 33rd annual Cranberry Fest takes over the town.

It's all focused on Wisconsin's official fruit.

"Cranberry Fest is the largest event for Eagle River," Cranberry Fest Organizer Kim Emerson said.

Even larger than the famous World Championship Snowmobile races.

Kim Emerson leads the event. She says there are events all throughout the city.

"At the Vilas County fairgrounds we have over 300 arts and crafts vendors, we've got lots of cranberry foods," Emerson said.

"Then if you go out to the Eagle River Derby track we have the cranberry fest marketplace. There's commercial things out there, there's some crafters out there, there are flea market items at the derby track. Then downtown Eagle River is famous for its antique market as well as its farmer's market."

You can also take a cranberry marsh and winery tour from the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce.

RHINELANDER - A landfill near Rhinelander saw more recycling last year.

The Oneida County Solid Waste Department had an increase in recycled materials in 2013.

People might be buying more because of an improving economy, but that's not the only reason for the increase.

The contracts from disposal companies also play a major role.

"The contract for the city of Rhinelander had come up and it was re-bid," said Oneida County Solid Waste Superintendent Brian Dutcher. "Northern Waste at the time was awarded that bid or that contract. All of the materials that they picked up for the city came out here."
