Local Organizations Hope To Raise Alzheimer's Awareness Submitted: 09/21/2012
RHINELANDER - People over 65 are part of the fastest growing demographic in the Northwoods.

And that's the exact age when people are at the greatest risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Friday is Alzheimer's Action Day - a time when local organizations can recognize the fight against the disease.

"Really about raising awareness, educating the community about Alzheimer's disease and that people who are affected need that support of family and friends," Outreach Specialist Julie St. Pierre said.

"They need the support of their community as they face this illness."

The population in the area is getting older and the baby boomers are hitting retirement age.

That means local resources are crucial.

"We know that everday families and people who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's express to us the stigma they feel is associated with that diagnosis," St. Pierre said.

"Oftentimes they feel alone, because family and other friends maybe don't understand the disease or understand how it's impacting them."

The Fall Education Conference is coming up.

St. Pierre welcomes community input about Alzheimer's education.

New numbers show April was the 22nd consecutive month of growth.

Sales were up 9 percent compared to April of last year.

The median price for existing homes rose 8 percent.

For the northern region of the state, sales were up five percent in April.

RHINELANDER - It often feels like there are two seasons in Wisconsin: Winter and Construction.

Drivers in Rhinelander will head into summer with a brand new construction-related headache to deal with on a major roadway.

"We're hopeful, and we'll work our best to get it to where we want it to be," city engineer Tim Kingman said.

Rhinelander city leaders think that's the mindset to take when it comes to a major construction project on busy Kemp Street. Smaller portions of the project will start in early June. That's on Bruner St. and Boyce Drive.

ANTIGO - Most of us waited eagerly for spring so we could start our summer hobbies.

But farmers wait for spring so they can get to work.

John Schroeder runs a potato farm in Antigo.

He says the late spring could mean a bad harvest for crops like alfalfa, but potatoes should be just fine.

"It generally started a little wet and cold, he said. "We were probably three or four days behind planting right now, but we had a good week last week, so we're catching up."

Motorcylcist speeds away from Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Deputies at 100+ MPH Submitted: 05/20/2013

MERRILL - When most people see flashing red lights, they pull over.

Lincoln county deputies are looking for a motorcycle rider who didn't.

A Cafe Racer bike flew down highway 51 around 7pm last night going 84 miles per hour.

A deputy south of Tomahawk tried to pull the driver over, but the biker took off at over 100 miles an hour. For safety reasons, the deputy did not start a chase.

Antigo Store Sells Powerball Ticket Worth $1 Million Submitted: 05/20/2013

ANTIGO - Somebody in Antigo won $1 million this weekend.

A cashier at Krist Food Mart sold a winning powerball ticket.

But so far, no one has claimed the big prize.

The winning ticket was announced Sunday.

Since then, Krist customers have been asking who won it.

Manager Linda Hemingson said she was surprised to hear the ticket came from her store.
