WAUSAU - Grade schoolers in Wausau learned about the constitution today from Governor Scott Walker.

Governor Walker stopped by South Mountain Elementary School to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the ratification of the constitution.

Walker brought along a friend from the past to help out. Senator Morris was one of the signers of the constitution, and he told the kids what it was like to be there.

Walker says he wanted to celebrate with 4th and 5th graders because they've just learned about the government and it's still fresh in their minds.

"I think oftentimes kids who get excited about that inspire their parents and grandparents. And that's a great way to renew that flame of excitement that we've had that our patriots started more than two centuries ago," says Walker.

Walker also addressed the $7 million dollar proposed plan for all high school juniors to take the ACT. It's a move State Superintendent Tony Evers wants to make to get a better grasp on student progress.

"This is just an initial request, but I think for us we're certainly very open to working with him on the changes, looking at the best way to do that. Whether or not it's this specific test or something similar to that, I think looking at a better, more comprehensive way to test all kids in a way that's fair and transparent would be a good approach," says Walker.

He's celebrating the constitution but the upcoming election isn't far from his mind.

Elections Chief Kevin Kennedy recently said they no longer have time to implement the voter ID law procedures before November. That's if the law makes it past the lawsuits holding it up in court by then.

"I think it's unfortunate. I mean ultimately it appears more and more likely it'll happen after the election, before the next election. But you know it was in place in February, the law's already been enacted, it's already been signed into law, it's just been heald up in a very liberal court in Madison. In February, what I saw around the state was that voters didn't have a problem with it," says Walker.

Opponents say the law could prevent seniors, lower income voters and minorities from voting.

Governor Walker is traveling the state visiting a number of other schools to celebrate the constitution.
