BOULDER JUNCTION - It's a small community doing big things. As you drive along Highway M in Vilas County, a new community center may soon welcome you to Boulder Junction.

The planning committee has drawn up a proposal for a 14,000 square foot building that would replace the current 60-year-old one.

The community center houses the public library, town offices, police office and meeting rooms, and it's getting crowded.

"Our materials and our furniture and fixtures are crowded. It's technically not handicap accessable because you can't get from the front of the library to the back if you're in a wheelchair. We cannot add any material. Basically, for every book or DVD we purchase we have to get rid of one to make room on the shelf for the new one," says Library Director Cherie Sanderson.

The original plan was voted down in 2009 for being too expensive. The new building isn't cheap, but it's $1 million less than the original, totaling $2.3 million.

"It's a lot of money to tax payers and it is a big issue. Right now we're working on not only putting the project together but someday in the very near future looking for somebody that might want to step up to participate in the expense of this project," says Town Supervisor Dennis Reuss.

The Friends of the Library have already pledged $60,000.

There will be informational meetings on September 27th and October 4th.

The meeting for permanent residents to vote will be October 11th.

If the plans are approved construction is slated to begin in January.
