Bus Problems Leave Kids Stranded Submitted: 09/04/2012

RHINELANDER - Tuesday was the first day of classes for most kids across the state.

But in Rhinelander, the first day turned from exciting to scary for both parents and students.

Dozens of young children went on the wrong bus or were dropped off as much as two hours late from school yesterday afternoon.

"I was expecting it to go really easy but it did not," said Pelican School student Corbin Scheeler.

"It was awkward because I've never had to wait that long, and it was definitely scary being the only one from your neighborhood getting on the bus," said his sister Adrienne.

In addition to waiting longer than normal, other children were stuck on hot buses for nearly 45 minutes.

"It was really hot. I was sweating so much. I was sitting next to my best friend, and it felt like I was going to puke," said Corbin.

Bowen's Bus Service is the carrier for the School District of Rhinelander.

Confusion with children transferring at James Williams Middle School, a new K-12 route scheme, and several substitute drivers may have contributed to the problems.

A district administrator told us that officials are very concerned and will be investigating the Bowen's situation.

But two Northwoods teenagers want to get right back into school in another country.

But they need help.

Two students at Lakeland Union High School only have 24 days left to meet their $6,000 goal.

ANTIGO - Most of us waited eagerly for spring so we could start our summer hobbies.

But farmers wait for spring so they can get to work.

John Schroeder runs a potato farm in Antigo.

He says the late spring could mean a bad harvest for crops like alfalfa, but potatoes should be just fine.

"It generally started a little wet and cold, he said. "We were probably three or four days behind planting right now, but we had a good week last week, so we're catching up."

Motorcylcist speeds away from Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Deputies at 100+ MPH Submitted: 05/20/2013

MERRILL - When most people see flashing red lights, they pull over.

Lincoln county deputies are looking for a motorcycle rider who didn't.

A Cafe Racer bike flew down highway 51 around 7pm last night going 84 miles per hour.

A deputy south of Tomahawk tried to pull the driver over, but the biker took off at over 100 miles an hour. For safety reasons, the deputy did not start a chase.

Massive tornado flattens homes, neighborhoods in Oklahoma Submitted: 05/20/2013

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - A monstrous tornado as much as a mile wide roars through the Oklahoma City suburbs, flattening entire neighborhoods, setting buildings on fire and landing a direct blow on an elementary school.

NBC News reports at least 37 people are confirmed dead as of 7:30 p.m.

The storm laid waste to scores of buildings in Moore, south of the city.

The National Weather Service says it had winds up to 200 mph.

People wearing neon-green vests were joined by residents in the search through rubble. Neighborhoods are flattened and homes blown apart.

Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department says an elementary school took a direct hit from the mile-wide tornado.

Rhinelander ready for Kemp Street sewer project, some homeowners wishing for more notice Submitted: 05/20/2013

RHINELANDER - It often feels like there are two seasons in Wisconsin: Winter and Construction.

Drivers in Rhinelander will head into summer with a brand new construction-related headache to deal with on a major roadway.

"We're hopeful, and we'll work our best to get it to where we want it to be," city engineer Tim Kingman said.

Rhinelander city leaders think that's the mindset to take when it comes to a major construction project on busy Kemp Street. Smaller portions of the project will start in early June. That's on Bruner St. and Boyce Drive.
