- Thousands of young men dream of a spot on the Green Bay Packers. Rookie cornerback, Otis Merrill, was one of the lucky few.
After playing on the fields of UW Madison and Illinois State University, Merrill can now call Lambeau field his new home.
But it’s not easy to live the life of a Green Bay Packer…
"We wake up probably like 5 o'clock..The rookies we usually have weights around 6... We're at meetings pretty much from 7:30 to 11:00... We have practice, after practice the rookies have to come back again for corrections... So we pretty much get done around 5 o'clock."
As a rookie fresh out of college, Merrill knows he needs to step up his game.
"The tempo is much faster and you have to perform at a higher level... You have to be a lot more technically sound, and you have to really know the defenses in and out so you can truly play fast," says Merrill.
Stepping on to the field with some of best players in the league, is not only a dream come true, but the learning experience of a lifetime.
“It's something I've been working for since I was just a little boy... It's something that I aspire to be so, I'm taking notes and anything they can give me, I'm taking it in."
Merrill was picked up by the Packers back in May, and had a chance to put his name on the board with a 60-yard kickoff return in Thursday’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. Even so, he knows he's got tough competition for a spot on the final roster. But, that won't stop him from dreaming big.
“I have the opportunity cause I'm here so I'm just gonna keep on working hard and let the chips fall where they fall…I'm gonna work hard, and climb this ladder, and I expect to be one of the greats one of these days."
Whether his NFL career is long or short, Merrill is ready with a back-up plan.
"I was a broadcast journalism major in school, so I would hope to be like an ESPN analyst or something like that to stay close to the game.”
The Packers will be back in action this Thursday at Cincinnati in their 3rd preseason game.
