Three Lakes football goes 8-man Submitted: 08/15/2012

THREE LAKES - Teams throughout Wisconsin are busy getting ready to kickoff their seasons. But in Three Lakes, after several seasons with very few players, and even fewer victories, they are playing a whole new game.

It's a new chapter for the Three Lakes football team. After years of struggeling just to even field a team, let alone win, the Bluejays are switching from 11-man football - to the newly approved 8-game game. The WIAA approved of the new format in January, with teams making a three-year commitment.


"I think it will be a cool change, " said three Lakes senior wide receiver and defensive end Riley Liebscher. "I don't know too much about it, but can't wait to see what happens."

When your used to coaching the traditional game - there are some changes, but the players don't seem to mind.

"I've seen some 8-man football on youtube," added senior Brent LaDuke. "It's really not that much different."

"It's like learning game," countered head coach Brian Fritz. "now you ahve 3 interior linemen (as opposed to five in 11-man football) and four receivers and a quarterback."

It's not the first time Three Lakes has fielded less than 11 players for at one time. In fact, Carl Levandoski played on the first team in 1947 - they played 6 to a side back then.

"We didn't have much for uniforms back then. They mostly would compare to the practice jerseys of today," said Levandoski.

Three Lakes played 6-man ball unitl 1949 - when they switched to the 11-man game.

Coach Fritz adds, "We are road warriors this season. We travel all the way to Luck, to Elkhart Lake, even some games in Michigan."

Three Lakes will play a seven game independent season.

"With our size, this will prevent freshmen facing the upperclassmen from other teams," Emerson Hegeman, a senior offensive and defensive lineman. "It just makes the game safer for the whole team."

Three Lakes will play a scrimmage at Stockbridge on August 24th. The Bluejays will officially open the year at Luck on August 30th.

RHINELANDER - Rhinelander needs new businesses to fill empty stores downtown.

This past weekend 26 properties had an open house. It was organized by Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. (DRI) and Flanders Reality Group. Finding the right home for a business can be hard. But the event tried to help those on the hunt.

"This way, you know, your here, you look, your able to talk to someone who knows the property. And you can really make a really good decision right now today," said Maggie Steffen, DRI Executive Director.

RHINELANDER - People with disabilities deserve the same chance to find a job as anyone else.

Headwaters Incorporated in Rhinelander wants to help make sure that happens.

Six people completed the Employability class at Headwaters this year.

They were recognized for their work Wednesday at Nicolet College.

The students in the class toured several workplaces in the area.

Ministry Health Care to Cut Hundreds of Jobs Submitted: 05/22/2013

MILWAUKEE - Ministry Health Care plans to lay off several hundred employees, citing a drop in the number of patients and cuts in federal reimbursement levels.

Ministry operates 15 hospitals and 47 clinics across Wisconsin.

The facilities include Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Ministry spokesman Geoffrey Huys says about 225 to 250 employees will be cut, mainly through attrition and job eliminations.

RHINELANDER - Taking a math test paid off literally for a Rhinelander high school student.

Shane White placed second in the state in the Trig-Star exam.

The Trig-Star is a 60 minute exam.

It has three, multi stage questions.

Students answer questions as though they're land surveyors.

National Geography Bee Finalist Submitted: 05/22/2013

WASHINGTON - Local geography whiz Asha Jain made the final round of the National Geography Bee in Washington today. But fell just short of the title.

Jain from Minocqua passed the preliminary round of 54 contestants on Monday. The final round of 10 was this morning.

The contestants are competing for a 25-thousand dollar scholarship and trip to the Galapagos Islands. Jain finished in the top six.

The title clinching question: "Because the earth bulges at the equator, which mountain peak on the earth is farthest from the earth’s center?"

Gov. Walker calls for nearly $13 million to boost walleye production Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - Gov. Scott Walker has announced a nearly $13 million effort to boost walleye production.

The plan calls for $8.2 million in borrowing authority to expand hatcheries, $1.8 million for operating expenses over the next two fiscal years and $2 million for grants for private organizations to expand walleye production.

The plan also includes money for the University of Wisconsin Extension to continue aquaculture work, acquiring walleye fingerlings from organizations and expanding a program that gives tribal youth the chance to work on natural resources-related projects.

Tougher Requirements Wanted for Recalls Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - A group of Wisconsin town officials want the state to raise requirements for recalling local officials.

Voters can now launch a recall effort for any reason related to the person's official responsibilities.

A bill has been introduced by Republican Representative Alvin Ott of Forest Junction.

It would require that the official be charged with committing a crime or committing an ethics violation before a recall could happen.
