- Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson will get another shot at elected office.
Just after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thompson was declared the winner in the four-way Republican U.S. Senate primary with about 34% of the vote.
Polls had shown Thompson, businessman Eric Hovde, and former Congressman Mark Neumann within points of each other in the final week before the election.
Hovde took 31%, while Neumann was at 23%.
State Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald finished a distant fourth.
Thompson advances to face U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin, who rolled to the Democratic nomination without a challenger.
The GOP primary was marked by heavy campaign spending from outside political groups.
Hovde poured millions of his own money into his campaign.
Thompson was elected to four terms as Wisconsin's governor, stepping down in 2001 to become President George W. Bush's Health and Human Services secretary.
