THREE LAKES - A fire destroyed an iconic boathouse Sunday night and sent one person to the hospital.

If you've motored through the Three Lakes chain you've probably stopped to admire the picturesque white boathouse on Little Fork Lake. But Sunday night's fire reduced the historic boathouse to rubble.

"Definitely it was a historical monument. A lot of people have a lot of memories from the boathouse. People come and look at it. It's one of the great boathouses on the chain," says Dave Kirby, Three Lakes Assistant Fire Chief.

Neighbors and visitors drifted by all day Monday to see what happened.

The boathouse was built in 1948. Back then the property was used as a Girls Camp, called Minne Wonka Lodge.

"For the initial attack the crew brought in two lines down the hill. They came and knocked it down to help the spread, to stop the spread of the fire up the hill. That was our main concern," says Kirby.

There are other buildings on the property the fire could have spread to through the trees. Some of those trees, you can see, were charred.

After about two and a half hours the fire was under control, but the boathouse, an old Cris Craft boat, and several antiques and artifacts inside were lost.

Sugar Camp and Eagle River Fire Departments assisted Three Lakes with the fire.

There is some good news: the man who was hurt was transported to Milwaukee for burn injuries, but he's expected to be OK.
