Christmas Tree Growers See Seedlings Wither in Drought Submitted: 07/31/2012
MADISON - The drought has killed many of the newly-planted Christmas trees in southern Wisconsin.

Growers say they'll have to plant twice as many next year to make up for the loss.

Caledonia Tree Farm owner Russell Kook near Merrimac says most of the 4,500 seedlings he planted this year have died.

Kook says other growers he's talked to are experiencing the same losses.

Wisconsin has about 900 Christmas tree farms that produce about 1 million trees a year.

The state ranks fifth in production nationally.

Growers say there should be plenty of trees this season because the older trees have deeper root systems and can survive the drought conditions.

WAUSAU - Last June, Kerby Kneiss died after he was beaten to death with a baseball bat.

Prosecutors think Warren Krohn was one of the men who killed Kneiss.

But Krohn's lawyer argues police might not have collected the evidence against him legally.

Krohn's lawyer argued that what he said while police interrogated him shouldn't be used in court. They say he was in police custody - but was not informed of his Miranda Rights.

Monday, the Sugar Camp Town Board decided to allow ATVs on its roads.

All ATV drivers must wear helmets and license their vehicles.

But even with those rules, some residents still think ATVs on the roads will be dangerous.

36-year-old Christopher Meindel has been on the run for just more than a month.

He's listed as 5 foot 10 and 170 pounds.

He has multiple tattoos on both arms.

Meindel was convicted of making and selling meth.

That’s why school districts struggle to keep up with new technology.

The school district of Rhinelander realized that back in 1996.

That's when the community passed a technology referendum.

It gives the district $600,000 a year to spend on technology.

The board unanimously approved the motion to purchase new laptops, desktop computers and chrome books Monday night.
