Minocqua Man Charged with Child Abuse and Strangulation Submitted: 07/30/2012

RHINELANDER - The child abuse case against a Minocqua man got back in action Monday. It had stalled earlier this month so the defendant could get a new attorney

Daniel Stevens faces four felonies stemming from the original abuse case against him.

The criminal complaint says Stevens shoved a popsicle down a child's throat during dinner, causing them to choke. It also alleges he frequently picks the kids up off the ground by the neck to spank them.

He was charged earlier this month with two felonies for strangulation and child abuse, then later for violating a restraining order.

He was charged twice with felony bail jumping; once when he didn't stay away from the victims, and the second time for drinking alcohol.

Judge Patrick O'Melia told Stevens today he didn't want to see him back in court before his preliminary hearing.

"Well if we see you again Mr. Stevens between now and October it's going to be a significant cash bond," says Judge O'Melia.

"I guarantee you will not," says Stevens.

Stevens is out on $1,000 cash bail. He'll have a preliminary hearing for all of these charges October 5th at 2:00 PM.
