EAGLE RIVER - Americans are still struggling to find work, but one Northwoods woman took her employment situation into her own hands.

When she lost her summer job she opened her own paddle board renting company.

"It's just something fun they can do on the water," says Sarah Weyenberg.

Paddle boarding isn't huge in the Northwoods, but Weyenberg saw that as an opportunity when she lost her summer job at a restaurant.

"What I do is I deliver the boards to the customers, and then I give them a lesson, and then I pick up the board whenever they are done with it," says Weyenberg.

She started in the middle of last summer so it took a while to get the word out.

"I think this year I'll make a lot more money. But how I'm looking at it is, I'm going to get so much more experience starting my own business. I'm getting a lot more out of it, and I'm enjoying it a lot more," says Weyenberg.

Weyenberg is a senior at UW-La Crosse majoring in recreational management. She hopes to expand her business on a larger scale, and might even might do so right here.

"I could definitely see myself being in the Northwoods, just because I grew up here in the summers. This is where my greatest memories are," says Weyenberg.

Weyenberg says going into business is a scary step, but if there's something you love to do, she thinks you should try to make it into a career.

"It's a lot more work than working for someone else, but it's worth it."
