TOMAHAWK - Nearly two months ago, we told you about a bridge project in Tomahawk that angered a lot of people on Lake Nokomis.

The proposed Highway Y bridge was planned without enough clearance to allow some pontoon boats to pass underneath.

Newswatch 12 found out about a change directed by the Feds after the project started that should ease tensions.

Construction on the new Highway Y bridge has been underway for weeks.

But only days ago, the Federal Highway Administration stepped in and told contractors to raise the bridge level.

The new bridge was in the process of being built at the same height as the old one, which was too low for many pontoons.

"The Federal Highway came out here to see what was actually going on. When they came out here, they were explained why all of the citizens out here and why Lincoln County wanted to raise the bridge. They thought, well, yeah, as long as we're moving the bridge to the south ten feet, we can raise it," says Lincoln County Highway Commissioner Jerry Jagmin.

A bump of nine inches should be plenty to allow all boats to move under it.

That means people from homes and businesses on each side will now be able to travel freely.

Perhaps best of all, the project is still on schedule.

"We need to get this roadway open by fall ride, to help the businesses and help the motorcycles get through this area," says Jagmin.

Jagmin told us he sees the solution as a win-win for everybody.

That fall ride is scheduled for mid-September.
