Hodag MASH Blood Drive Hopes To Help Summer Blood Shortage Submitted: 07/10/2012

RHINELANDER - Summertime is slow for blood donations across the country.

It's especially slow in the Northwoods after the fourth of July.

That's why the 3rd annual Hodag MASH Blood Drive is hoping to have more than 150 people donate blood Tuesday.

Organizers say it's a critical time to have more blood with all the tourists in the area.

"Now is a really good time for people to give blood," Angela Brumm, from the Community Blood Center Inc., says.

"The reason we're holding this blood drive today is because blood donations are always low around holidays. That's particularly true for the summer holidays like the fourth of July. Last week there were fewer blood donations then were needed. This week we're hoping to replenish the blood supply with blood drives like this."

Monica Hilt is the president of Ministry Sacred Heart-St. Mary's Hospitals.

She donated blood Tuesday and says local drives are important to keep the blood supply strong.

"This event, the MASH event, has been very successful over the last couple of years in bringing people out in supporting the community blood center," Hilt says.

"This time of the year in the Northwoods is very busy with tourists coming up to the area and unfortunately the demand for use of blood also goes up in the summertime months. It's also very good to have a good supply on hand."

Each person donates around a pint of blood.

State Approves Armory Renovations Submitted: 05/20/2013

MERRILL - Women serve alongside men in the National Guard.

Since the 1970s, women serving in Merrill also had to share everything with men - right down to the bathroom.

But that will change soon.

The state's building commission approved renovations to 15 armory buildings, including the National Guard post in Merrill.

Captain Joy Staab said the renovations will include showers and toilets for women.

ANTIGO - Most of us waited eagerly for spring so we could start our summer hobbies.

But farmers wait for spring so they can get to work.

John Schroeder runs a potato farm in Antigo.

He says the late spring could mean a bad harvest for crops like alfalfa, but potatoes should be just fine.

"It generally started a little wet and cold, he said. "We were probably three or four days behind planting right now, but we had a good week last week, so we're catching up."

Massive tornado flattens homes, neighborhoods in Oklahoma Submitted: 05/20/2013

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - A monstrous tornado as much as a mile wide roars through the Oklahoma City suburbs, flattening entire neighborhoods, setting buildings on fire and landing a direct blow on an elementary school.

NBC News reports at least 37 people are confirmed dead as of 7:30 p.m.

The storm laid waste to scores of buildings in Moore, south of the city.

The National Weather Service says it had winds up to 200 mph.

People wearing neon-green vests were joined by residents in the search through rubble. Neighborhoods are flattened and homes blown apart.

Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department says an elementary school took a direct hit from the mile-wide tornado.

Antigo Store Sells Powerball Ticket Worth $1 Million Submitted: 05/20/2013

ANTIGO - Somebody in Antigo won $1 million this weekend.

A cashier at Krist Food Mart sold a winning powerball ticket.

But so far, no one has claimed the big prize.

The winning ticket was announced Sunday.

Since then, Krist customers have been asking who won it.

Manager Linda Hemingson said she was surprised to hear the ticket came from her store.
