Merrill Women Raise Breast Cancer Awareness with Submitted: 06/27/2012

MERRILL - They’re usually kept under shirts or in dresser drawer - but this month, bras are taking over windows all over downtown Merrill.

D’Lacey Haight and Christine Vorpagel of Discover Downtown Merrill want to raise awareness about breast cancer.

“Small town America and the businesses on Main Street care about the larger causes that are really going on across the country,” Vorpagel said.

“In a small community like this, you’re always just one step away from somebody who has dealt with it,” Haight said.

But they’re going beyond pink ribbons. Vorpagel and Haight want to collect enough bras to stretch across the Center Avenue Bridge.

They’re calling the campaign “Bras Across the Bridge,” and they hope to get more than 1,000 bras.

“It's a little on the edge, we'll give you that ,” Vorpagel said. “But that's what makes it a great idea.”

Bras are going up in window displays all around downtown Merrill. Every business has their own take.

“It’s just great fun, we’re having a hoot,” Haight said.

All that fun is for a cause bigger than the bras or the bridge.

“It's encouraging the survivors and it's a way to remember those that have succumbed to that illness,” Vorpagel said.

Bras Across the Bridge is collecting donations through July 27. The display will be up in time for Crazy Days August 2nd.

New study raises concerns about Wisconsin economy Submitted: 06/18/2013

MILWAUKEE - A new study raises concerns about Wisconsin's long-term economy.

Part of the problem is the state's larger industries sell older technologies that are being overtaken by newer advances.

Three of the state's five largest sectors have to do with paper and printing.

That could be a concern as the nation shifts its demand toward digital media.

The study also says Wisconsin's main industries aren't as globally minded as are manufacturers elsewhere.
