Fire Destroys Crandon Home, Leaves Family Homeless Submitted: 06/27/2012

CRANDON - Wednesday was a scary reminder for people with fire pits in their yards. A fire broke out just before two yesterday morning, and destroyed a Crandon home.

When Sam and Nicole Tomlin went to bed Tuesday night all was quiet. But just before two a.m. they woke up to the sound of glass breaking, and a raging fire on their front porch.

"Fire doubles in size every minute so it doesn't take long. It probably burned a half hour, you know, totally," says Chief Darrell Wilson, from the Crandon Fire Department.

The Tomlin's and their children got out safely. But that half hour was long enough to make part of the roof cave in, and burn almost everything inside beyond recognition.

All of the human family members made it out ok, but some pets weren't so lucky.

"A cat and a litter of little ones perished," says Chief Wilson.

Chief Wilson says the family had a raised fire pit on the front deck. The Tomlin's told him they threw water on it before they went to bed. But Wilson says it's been hot and windy enough out it easily could have just dried and kept burning.

"And they thought being as they had 10, 12 inches of clearance, that would be ok, but it's not. Elevated fire pits or any burnable thing should be at least a minimum from any combustible material," says Chief Wilson.

EAGLE RIVER - The initiative will help to rebound what's thought of as a suffering walleye population by adding hundreds of thousands of the fish to Wisconsin lakes.

The project could improve fishing for the state's most popular game fish and tourism in the state. George Langely, a local fishing guide at Eagle Sports bait shop in Eagle River, says walleye fishing isn't what it used to be.

One Dollar Price Tag on Historic Building Submitted: 05/23/2013

MERRILL - An historic Merrill building will only cost you one dollar to buy, but the price tag is set low because there's much bigger cost involved.

The Lincoln House in Merrill is badly damaged and beyond repair.

It needs to be demolished.

The buyer would have to pay for that, plus have a plan to redevelop the site.

The city has been trying to sell the Lincoln House for three years.

The Northwoods Community Elementary School hosted Marketplace Day Thursday for friends, family, and community members.

Usually, alfalfa survives winter.

But a long, cold, and difficult winter is making things hard for many farmers.

DNR raises bag limits on hundreds of northern Wisconsin lakes Submitted: 05/23/2013

MADISON - Wildlife officials have increased daily walleye bag limits for anglers as Wisconsin Chippewa spearfishing winds down.

The state Department of Natural Resources has raised limits on 423 lakes in the ceded territory, a swath of northern Wisconsin the tribes gave to the government more than a century ago. The rules include a five-walleye limit on 289 lakes, a four-walleye limit on three lakes, and a three-walleye limit on 131 lakes.

Bag limits on 113 lakes remain unchanged.

AAA projects Memorial Day traffic down slightly Submitted: 05/23/2013

MADISON - Expect to see plenty of traffic out on the roads this Memorial Day weekend. But if there's a silver lining, traffic may be down slightly.

AAA estimates 627,000 people are expected to travel by road in Wisconsin this weekend. That's down about 1.6 percent from last year. One reason could be gas prices.

Statewide, they're averaging $3.93 a gallon.

That's 33 cents more than a month ago and 21 cents higher than last year. AAA says gas prices are higher here than the national average of $3.65 because several refineries in the Upper Midwest have been closed for maintenance.

Unemployment Down for Most of State Submitted: 05/23/2013

MADISON - Some northwoods counties got left behind as unemployment rates IMPROVED almost everywhere in Wisconsin last month.

The state Department of Workforce Development said yesterday that unemployment got worse in April in Price, Menominee and Calumet counties.

Unemployment stayed the same in Iron and Langlade counties.

Rates improved in the other 67 counties.
