Vilas County Sheriff Department Will Investigate Hurley Shooting Submitted: 06/25/2012

EAGLE RIVER - The Vilas County Sheriff's Department will handle the Hurley shooting investigation.

Friday morning a SWAT team shot and killed 85-year-old Leo J. Driscoll at Southgate Village Apartments.

Authorities say Driscoll made threatening comments to his apartment manager and law enforcement.

Sheriff Frank Tomlanovich says his department will treat this like any other criminal investigation.

"What we're doing is going in and fact-finding," Tomlanovich says. "We need to learn and determine as much of the information and facts that we possibly can. Then compile all that data and reduce it to report form."

Police say Driscoll threatened his apartment manager with a handgun, and then retreated to his apartment.

Driscoll's girlfriend warned police he had multiple firearms.

Sheriff Tomlanovich says there are specific guidelines when using deadly force.

"The only time an officer can use is if they feel, in their own mind, that they're in danger of death or great bodily harm," Tomlanovich says. "Or a citizen is in similar danger. Every officer in this state knows it is a last resort."

Two Hurley police officers and several others on the SWAT team are on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Tomlanovich says in Vilas County if an officer shoots and kills someone, they’re placed on administrative leave.

Ministry Health Care to Cut Hundreds of Jobs Submitted: 05/22/2013

MILWAUKEE - Ministry Health Care plans to lay off several hundred employees, citing a drop in the number of patients and cuts in federal reimbursement levels.

Ministry operates 15 hospitals and 47 clinics across Wisconsin.

The facilities include Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Ministry spokesman Geoffrey Huys says about 225 to 250 employees will be cut, mainly through attrition and job eliminations.

National Geography Bee Finalist Submitted: 05/22/2013

WASHINGTON - Local geography whiz Asha Jain made the final round of the National Geography Bee in Washington today. But fell just short of the title.

Jain from Minocqua passed the preliminary round of 54 contestants on Monday. The final round of 10 was this morning.

The contestants are competing for a 25-thousand dollar scholarship and trip to the Galapagos Islands. Jain finished in the top six.

The title clinching question: "Because the earth bulges at the equator, which mountain peak on the earth is farthest from the earth’s center?"

Gov. Walker calls for nearly $13 million to boost walleye production Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - Gov. Scott Walker has announced a nearly $13 million effort to boost walleye production.

The plan calls for $8.2 million in borrowing authority to expand hatcheries, $1.8 million for operating expenses over the next two fiscal years and $2 million for grants for private organizations to expand walleye production.

The plan also includes money for the University of Wisconsin Extension to continue aquaculture work, acquiring walleye fingerlings from organizations and expanding a program that gives tribal youth the chance to work on natural resources-related projects.

Tougher Requirements Wanted for Recalls Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - A group of Wisconsin town officials want the state to raise requirements for recalling local officials.

Voters can now launch a recall effort for any reason related to the person's official responsibilities.

A bill has been introduced by Republican Representative Alvin Ott of Forest Junction.

It would require that the official be charged with committing a crime or committing an ethics violation before a recall could happen.

MINOCQUA - Memorial Day weekend will bring lots of boaters to our lakes and rivers.

But hopefully, those boaters won't bring water and plants from other lakes.

Oneida County's UW-Extension held a "Clean Boats, Clean Waters" workshop to help prevent that today.

Volunteers learned to identify aquatic invasive species.

They also learned how to properly clean boats when they come off the water.

Plan Looked at Marathon County Jail Troubles Submitted: 05/21/2013

WAUSAU - Plans that could have made Marathon County Jail safer, were never put in place.

Marathon County officials told a citizens committee about the unused plan during their review of an attack on two officers in March.

Marathon County Administrator Brad Karger said they made the plan after 2010 survey showed widespread unease with jail employees.

The plan would have come up with solutions for specific problems shown by the survey.
