Vilas County Board Votes Down Possible Phelps ATV Trails Submitted: 06/21/2012

PHELPS - It seems Vilas County residents want to stick to silent sports.

This week, the county board voted down a resolution to allow ATV's on parts of County Highway A in Phelps.

Currently, no one can ride ATV's on Vilas County roads.

Phelps residents hoped to change that.

But after 14 months of work by Phelps town leaders, it will stay that way.

"One of the reasons County Highway A works is good visibility, wide roads, et cetera," Snook says.

Phelps Town Chairman Colin Snook and other leaders felt this section of County Highway A in Phelps would be a perfect trial road for ATV's.

The Vilas County board disagrees. The board voted against a resolution to allow ATV's on a little more than six miles of road in Phelps.

"How you measure the success of the trial period was subject to debate," Vilas County Board Chairman Steve Favorite says. "There was no measuring bar, what determines the criteria of whether or not it's successful? I guess two years from now the county and town will just sit down and look at each other and say 'was it successful?'"

Some argued it'll help connect Forest County and Vilas County.

"That was one of the arguments for," Favorite says. "It's a strong argument is that it's a connecting argument. To connect to Forest County on County Chunk Highway A."

Snook says it could help Phelps and other surrounding cities or towns.

"Long-term it will give us one more tool in our toolbox of something that we can offer to entice people to come to Phelps and spend money and do business here," Snook says.

Vilas County Board Chairman Steve Favorite says ATV supporters can look at what snowmobilers and bicyclists have done to push for trails.

But he thinks ATVs face an uphill battle in Vilas County.

"A lot of the public that are still against ATV's," Favorite says. "They're pro silent sports."

Snook understands but says a willingness to compromise is necessary.

"We need economic development here, ATV's might be a piece of that, they might not, but you don't know until you explore it."

MADISON - Gogebic Taconite wants to move quickly to dig an iron mine in Ashland and Iron Counties.

This week, they submitted plans for the next step in the state's process.

Gogebic Taconite also officially told the DNR it will seek a mining permit.

Kelley, a Medford resident, wants to find a picture of every Wisconsin soldier killed in Vietnam.

“I know that I will continue to work, and I have enlisted the help of many others that will continue to work until we find them all," he says.

Woman killed when ATV goes over cliff Submitted: 06/19/2013

SAXON - A woman died when an ATV sailed over a cliff in Iron county.

Deputies got the call around seven last night about the ATV crash near Harbor Drive in Saxon.

The ATV did not make it around a corner on Harbor drive and traveled over the cliff, coming to rest on the beach.

A 42 year old woman who was a passenger on the ATV was dead at the scene.

Her 44 year old husband had been driving, and suffered severe injuries.

WAUSAU - A Wausau high school will go green to save money and teach students about energy conservation.

New solar panels will sit on top of the roof.

It will save Newman High School approximately $400 a year.

The W-P-S foundation donated the system as part of the SolarWise for school program.

It's an educational experience for the kids as well.

TOMAHAWK - Workers at Daigle Brothers in Tomahawk can build almost anything out of steel. Most of their business is creating custom parts and putting up buildings, but more recently, they've been building a new invention.

Daigle Brothers began in 1987. Back then they did a lot of construction related jobs like painting. Later they focused on steel construction.

"In the 90's we did a lot of school buildings, there was a lot of schools being built, so we supplied structural steel for these building projects... Currently our biggest markets are universities, hospitals, office buildings... we do a lot of fire stations," said Steve Daigle President of Daigle Brothers Inc.
