Two Men Arrested in Connection with the Beating Death of a Wausau Man Submitted: 06/20/2012

WAUSAU - Wausau Police have arrested two people in connection with a Monday night murder. They believe other suspects could be connected to the case.

Just after 7 a.m. Tuesday, the body of 49-year-old Kerby Kniess was discovered by his roommates.

Police said the beaten body was found in the garage of their home located at 127 7th Avenue in Wausau.

Deputy Chief Bryan Hilts of the Wausau Police Department said "Late in the afternoon it was determined Mr. Kniess died from a depressed skull fracture causing significant trauma to his head. We recovered 3 baseball bats. We believe one or more of the bats were involved in the assault on Mr. Kniess."

So far two men have been arrested in connection with the beating death of Kniess. They are 20-year-old Warren Krohn and 18-year-old Zachary Froelich.

Deputy Chief Hilts said, "We believe the parties were acquainted with each other and they went there to steal…This is very unusual for our jurisdiction."

As police continued to search for more evidence, several neighbors peered out of their windows to watch.

Richard Allikas, a neighbor, said "I did hear some cars that came to a definite screeching halt in that area."

Allikas has lived on the block for 8 months. He says because of the strong storms, he couldn't hear much of what happened next door the night of the murder. With two little children at home, he's worried about his family's safety.

"We're thinking twice about different security measures. Locking the windows at night, stuff like that," Allikas said.

Kniess lived at his residence for a few years. The night of his death, he had just come home from work at the Day's Bowl-a-Dome. He's was the head mechanic there for almost 30 years.

Dean Day, the owner of Day's Bowl-a-Dome, said "I just can't believe people that kind of age could have so much evil in them. Kerby was well liked by everybody. He didn't have an enemy in the world."

Krohn and Froehlich are being held in the Marathon County jail.

They are scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

The Lincoln House in Merrill is badly damaged and beyond repair.

It needs to be demolished.

The buyer would have to pay for that, plus have a plan to redevelop the site.

The city has been trying to sell the Lincoln House for three years.

"The walleye population has pretty much suffered in the last twenty years and it's really nice to see Madison recognizing that and taking some steps to do something about it. It will take a while but it's a great start."

The app lets you see what campsites are available, and reserve your spot online. It also gives information about trails and other activities in the area.

In the “old days” travelers could always call ahead about site availability, but by the time out of town visitors arrive, they might be full.
