Final Public Wolf Hunt Meeting To Be Held Tonight Submitted: 06/15/2012
RHINELANDER - In April, Governor Scott Walker signed a bill authorizing a wolf hunt in Wisconsin.

This month, the Wisconsin DNR is traveling across the state to get input on rules.

You can have your say tonight at James Williams Middle School in Rhinelander. This is the last of four public meetings before this fall's wolf hunt.

The DNR held a science committee meeting today to prepare. Tonight, they'll take input on hunting zones, permit levels and quotas.

Bill Vander Zouwen, the DNR Wildlife and Landscape Ecology Chief, says "Some of the people that come to the meetings have a lot of expertise in that because it's a big part of their lives. They'll be regulated as a result of the rules, so we need to hear from them."

Eric Kones of the Cattlemen's Association is concerned the DNR won't issue enough permits - he wants 4500 permits issued and 300 wolves killed the first season.

"I don't know if we're going to get what we want from the DNR itself, but we're going to be speaking to the Natural Resources board as well, and they make the final decision, what's going to happen regarding this harvest."

The open house starts at 6pm, with presentations from the DNR at 7. Comments or questions from the public are welcome.

MILWAUKEE - Ministry Health Care plans to lay off several hundred employees, citing a drop in the number of patients and cuts in federal reimbursement levels.

Ministry operates 15 hospitals and 47 clinics across Wisconsin.

The facilities include Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

RHINELANDER - Rhinelander needs new businesses to fill empty stores downtown.

This past weekend 26 properties had an open house. It was organized by Downtown Rhinelander, Inc. (DRI) and Flanders Reality Group. Finding the right home for a business can be hard. But the event tried to help those on the hunt.

"This way, you know, your here, you look, your able to talk to someone who knows the property. And you can really make a really good decision right now today," said Maggie Steffen, DRI Executive Director.

White Takes Second Place in TrigStar Exam Submitted: 05/22/2013

RHINELANDER - Taking a math test paid off literally for a Rhinelander high school student.

Shane White placed second in the state in the Trig-Star exam.

The Trig-Star is a 60 minute exam.

It has three, multi stage questions.

Students answer questions as though they're land surveyors.

National Geography Bee Finalist Submitted: 05/22/2013

WASHINGTON - Local geography whiz Asha Jain made the final round of the National Geography Bee in Washington today. But fell just short of the title.

Jain from Minocqua passed the preliminary round of 54 contestants on Monday. The final round of 10 was this morning.

The contestants are competing for a 25-thousand dollar scholarship and trip to the Galapagos Islands. Jain finished in the top six.

The title clinching question: "Because the earth bulges at the equator, which mountain peak on the earth is farthest from the earth’s center?"

People with Disabilities Gain Job Skills in Northwoods Submitted: 05/22/2013

RHINELANDER - People with disabilities deserve the same chance to find a job as anyone else.

Headwaters Incorporated in Rhinelander wants to help make sure that happens.

Six people completed the Employability class at Headwaters this year.

They were recognized for their work Wednesday at Nicolet College.

The students in the class toured several workplaces in the area.

Gov. Walker calls for nearly $13 million to boost walleye production Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - Gov. Scott Walker has announced a nearly $13 million effort to boost walleye production.

The plan calls for $8.2 million in borrowing authority to expand hatcheries, $1.8 million for operating expenses over the next two fiscal years and $2 million for grants for private organizations to expand walleye production.

The plan also includes money for the University of Wisconsin Extension to continue aquaculture work, acquiring walleye fingerlings from organizations and expanding a program that gives tribal youth the chance to work on natural resources-related projects.

Tougher Requirements Wanted for Recalls Submitted: 05/22/2013

MADISON - A group of Wisconsin town officials want the state to raise requirements for recalling local officials.

Voters can now launch a recall effort for any reason related to the person's official responsibilities.

A bill has been introduced by Republican Representative Alvin Ott of Forest Junction.

It would require that the official be charged with committing a crime or committing an ethics violation before a recall could happen.
