- The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters dropped the first game of the season, at home at Witter Field, to the La Crosse Loggers Wednesday night, by the score of 7-3.
The Loggers put up two in the top of the first, getting RBIs from Tyler Servias and Juliene Jones, scoring two players that had reached via a free pass and hit-by-pitch. They added two more in the second and two in the third, taking a commanding 6-0 lead.
Starter Tommy Organ (JR, Univ. of North Florida) gave up all of those six runs, five earned, despite missing bats consistently.
The lefty recorded all of his outs on strikeouts. In fact, he picked up 11 strikeouts even though he recorded just 10 outs in his start, as one of his strikeouts was a dropped third strike to Logger Kody Davis, who reached and later scored.
The Rafters left two on in the first, one on in third, and had a runner doubled-off on a lineout in the second. Finally, in the fourth inning, the team capitalized. After Austin Neary (FR, Western Carolina Univ.) punched a one-out single, Alex Bacon (SO, Univ. of North Florida) drove the first pitch he saw to the opposite field, over the fence, just to right of the scoreboard in right-center field for his first home run.
Josh Cyr (JR, Univ. of North Alabama) also picked up his first RBI of the season; he led the Rafters in 2011 in that category, knocking in 39 runs.
Ronnie Muck (SO, Univ. of Illinois) was fantastic in relief for the Rafters, retiring all nine batters he faced, punching out four on strikes.
In the end, the Rafters couldn’t put enough hits together in bunches, as they fell 7-3. After the game, Field Manager Jake Martin discarded the idea of any hangover from an opening day loss: “They will be ready to go tomorrow. They played hard tonight, and I am happy for them. We will get a good start from Cole [Webb], and we will be good to go,” he said.
Organ (0-1) took the loss for Wisconsin Rapids, while Alex Gunn (1-0) picked up the first victory for La Crosse.
The Rafters play host to the Loggers again on Thursday, as Cole Webb (SO, Coffeyville CC) will square off against Jesse Holiday of the Loggers. First pitch is at 7:05.
