Opening night proves historic at Eagle River Speedway Submitted: 05/23/2012
EAGLE RIVER - On Tuesday night at the season opener for Eagle River Speedway, Jared Cech turned in a 14.31 second lap early on in the Micro-Sprint 600 feature. Going close to 96 miles per hour, the Rhinelander driver ran away from the competition to win the feature.

Marenisco, MI driver Duane Dunbar held off the 3-time track champion, Eagle River's 'Racin' Jason Zdroik to wint he B-Mod feature. Jesse Aho of Toivola, MI finished third.


Eagle River's Ben Pitlik won the Street Stock feature in a car he had not driver before Tuesday night. Pitlik borrowed a car to race and got by fellow Eagle River driver, Jason Jenson with only a couple of laps to go. Rhinelander's Dan Schultz held off Eagle River's 'Flyin' Ryan Valeria to wint he Pure Stock feature.

Winning the Junior Sprint was a 'Springer,' however it wasn't last year's champion, Ty Springer. Instead it was Tommy Joe - Ty's younger sister. Parker Retzlaff of Eagle River led throughout the entire race, but on the final turn to the finish line, the 6-year old Springer passed Retzlaff. Ty however did wint he heat race earlier in the night, as did Retzlaff.

Jake Reif won the heat race in the Micro Sprints, Pitlik and Valeria won the heat races in Street Stock. Mickey Nosser and Dunbar won the B-Mod heat races, and Jason Melton won the Pure Stock heat race.

Racing over the holdiay weekend returns to Eagle River Speedway on Sunday Night. Hot Laps begin at 7 p.m., with racing to start at 7:30 p.m.

State Approves Armory Renovations Submitted: 05/20/2013

MERRILL - Women serve alongside men in the National Guard.

Since the 1970s, women serving in Merrill also had to share everything with men - right down to the bathroom.

But that will change soon.

The state's building commission approved renovations to 15 armory buildings, including the National Guard post in Merrill.

Captain Joy Staab said the renovations will include showers and toilets for women.

But farmers wait for spring so they can get to work.

John Schroeder runs a potato farm in Antigo.

He says the late spring could mean a bad harvest for crops like alfalfa, but potatoes should be just fine.

"It generally started a little wet and cold, he said. "We were probably three or four days behind planting right now, but we had a good week last week, so we're catching up."

Antigo Store Sells Powerball Ticket Worth $1 Million Submitted: 05/20/2013

ANTIGO - Somebody in Antigo won $1 million dollars this weekend.

A cashier at Krist Food Mart sold a winning powerball ticket.

But so far, no one has claimed the big prize.

The winning ticket was announced Sunday.

Since then, Krist customers have been asking who won it.

Manager Linda Hemingson said she was surprised to hear the ticket came from her store.

Concert Benefits Raising Awareness For Lyme Disease Submitted: 05/19/2013

CRANDON - We normally go to concerts to enjoy music or see our favorite bands live.

But last night’s concert had a little something extra.

This concert was meant to raise awareness on Lyme disease at Crandon High Scool.

Sue Reeder was recently diagnosed with the disease, 15 years after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

"I always felt like there was something not quite right with that diagnosis," Reeder said.

Early Morning Crash Kills Goodman Man Submitted: 05/19/2013

ARMSTRONG CREEK - At 12:30 this morning a 26-year-old Goodman man died in a car crash.

It happened on Milan Road in the Township of Armstrong Creek.

There were no other cars involved. The Forest County Sheriff's Office is still investigating and won't release his name until his family is notified.

Victim from Tuesday's SUV, Tanker Crash Dies from Injuries Submitted: 05/19/2013

BOULDER JUNCTION - The New Auburn woman hospitalized from a crash earlier this week has died from her injuries.

It happened around 1 o'clock Tuesday on Hwy 51 at County Highway H in Manitowish Waters.

Fifty five-year-old Patty Hanson crashed her SUV into a gas tanker. The SUV flipped upside down in a marshy roadside ditch.

The semi truck driver was treated at the hospital and released shortly after. He told sheriff's deputies he was hauling 5-thousand gallons of gasoline.
The Vilas County Sheriff's and Coroner's Offices and the State Patrol are still investigating.

Man Arrested for Fifth OWI Submitted: 05/19/2013

WAUSAU - Wisconsin State Patrol Wausau Post arrested a Reedsville man for his fifth OWI.

Fifty five-year-old Gerald J Bellin Jr. was stopped for speeding on Highway T and 22 in Waupaca.

It happened Saturday evening. Bellin Jr. was taken to Riverside Medical in Waupaca for a
blood draw. Troopers then took him to the Waupaca county jail.
