Security Measures Up-to-Date in School District of Rhinelander Submitted: 03/05/2012
RHINELANDER - After a scare in Laona Monday, the School District of Rhinelander school district says they're up-to-date with a crisis response plan.

"It's a big deal to us, and we know that it's important. If something can happen in Laona, it can happen in Rhinelander. But we have taken every precaution and we believe that we have things in place to handle situations that, hopefully, we'll never have to deal with," says Kim Swisher, community education coordinator for the district.

Thanks to a partnership with the Oneida County Sheriff's Department, the district got a grant totalling over $200,000 to upgrade security systems.

Those upgrades included new cameras that can be accessed in real time by law enforcement inside and outside the schools, and lockdown drills at all grade levels.

Rhinelander High School's renovations include directing traffic through the main office and sealing the administrative offices off from the rest of the school.

Part of the problem is the state's larger industries sell older technologies that are being overtaken by newer advances.

Three of the state's five largest sectors have to do with paper and printing.

That could be a concern as the nation shifts its demand toward digital media.

The study also says Wisconsin's main industries aren't as globally minded as are manufacturers elsewhere.

Lincoln Co. Sheriff's Office seeks eyewitnesses to fire near Bucki's home Submitted: 06/17/2013

LINCOLN COUNTY - The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office needs your help.

Investigators want to talk to anyone who was near Anita Bucki's home between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. on April 26.

That's the day she went missing. Her husband, Mark Bucki, has been charged in her murder.

Lieutenant Tim Fischer says he specifically wants to talk to anyone who may have seen a large fire that morning.

Wisconsin produces most maple syrup since 1992 Submitted: 06/17/2013

MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin's maple syrup producers are having a great year.

A report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's statistical arm says the state's farmers produced five times as much maple syrup this year as last year and the most since it began keeping track in 1992.

The USDA says Wisconsin produced 265,000 gallons of maple syrup this year.

Last year's season was cut short by early warm weather.

$200,000 bond for mother accused of trying to kill her children Submitted: 06/17/2013

RIB LAKE - A judge set bond at $200,000 for a Rib Lake woman accused of trying to kill four of her children.

Heidi Mann, 37, appeared in Taylor County Circuit Court this morning.

The judge also ruled Mann is not allowed to have unsupervised contact with her kids.

Taylor County Sheriff's deputies arrested Mann June 14.

She has six children. She's accused of trying to kill her three, five, eight and 11-year-old children using carbon monoxide back in March.

Mann is due back in court June 25.

RHINELANDER - Thousands lost power in the northwoods, thanks to heavy storms last night.

Wisconsin Public service says 5-thousand customers were without electricity right after the storm yesterday.

2-thousand were still out early this morning, but almost everyone should have service back now.

The Rhinelander area was hardest hit.

MERRILL - Police now call a man who simply ran away from his probation officer armed and extremely dangerous.

36-year-old Christopher Meindel has been on the run for just more than a month.

He's listed as 5 foot 10 and 170 pounds.

He has multiple tattoos on both arms.

Meindel was convicted of making and selling meth.
