RHINELANDER - It's official, you now need a permit to burn here in the Northwoods.
Phil Puestow is a forestry technician at the Rhinelander Ranger Station.
He says with the lack of snow, burning permits will help protect people and property. Phil Puestow, Forestry Technician, Rhinelander Ranger Station, says, "It's important for the citizens of the state because fires, wildfires are devastating. We try and regulate the burning not only to protect not only yourself, but your neighbors property."
Puestow says anytime the ground is not 100 percent covered by snow-burning permits are required.
People who burn without them right now, could face a fine of almost $200.
The permits are free.
During the winter, you can burn any time of the day Monday through Sunday.
Now, it's only allowed from 6 p.m. to midnight Monday to Saturday.
