Cash for Appliances Rebate Program Submitted: 01/07/2010
RHINELANDER - The Cash for Appliances program is underway in Wisconsin.

The program started January 1, and is already generating a lot of buzz about what qualifies.

Forest TV & Appliance in Rhinelander is already seeing the benefits of the Cash for Appliances program.

Store Manager Amy McCorkle says, "The last two days we've had three washers and two refrigerators go out."

Amy McCorkle says the rebate program is also creating a lot of interest.

"The response has been overwhelming. Within the last two days we've had 20-25 customers come in asking for more information, asking which models qualify."

So what does qualify and just how much can you save?

Focus on Energy Program Representative Mark Gotta says, "We have a $100 incentive for buying a high-efficiency clothes washer, $75 for refrigeration, $50 for a freezer and $25 for dishwashers."

The Cash for Appliances rebate program is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Wisconsin got $5.4 million to give back to customers who buy energy efficient appliances.

Gotta says, "This is a top load unit that qualifies for the rebate."

It's important to know that not every energy-star appliance qualifies for the rebate. For example this Kitchenaid refrigerator is energy-star efficient but doesn't qualify, while this Jenn-Air refrigerator is energy-star efficient and you'll get the $75 rebate.

Gotta says in order to qualify, "It' has to be a high efficiency model" and not just an energy-efficient appliance.

Gotta says it's the savings isn't just in their pocketbook.

"By going to something newer they have a really good chance and a nice opportunity to save energy and save money on their utility bills."

A rebate that will hopefully save you money in the long run.

Cash rebates also include water heaters, oil and gas furnaces, air conditioners and solar hot water systems.

Mark Gotta says there is one caveat for rebates with refrigerators and freezers.

In order to get the $75 or $50 back, your old one has to be recycled in order to get the new one.
