CONOVER - One of the soldiers from the 951st who was injured in Afghanistan got to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with his family, but will have to make his trip home a brief one.
Sergeant First Class Scott Spurgeon of Conover was injured in the same attack that took the life of fellow soldier Ryan Adams on October first.
Sergeant Spurgeon received injuries to his left eye and left leg following the grenade attack in the Logar Province of Afghanistan.
He was flown into Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. for care and monitoring on October 6th.
He say he's feeling much better these days and the support from the Northwoods community has been amazing, "One of the most incredible people that was thinking about me was the parents of Ryan Adams. Right away they wanted to hear how I was doing."
Sergeant Spurgeon says he wants to thank each and every person whose shown him and the 951st support through this entire ordeal.
He says his leg is almost fully healed, but he still hasn't completely regained sight to his left eye.
Sergeant Spurgeon says because of this he has to return to Walter Reed on December first for further care and monitoring.
He says it's been a joy getting to spend time with friends and family at home for the past two weeks and see his comrades come home last weekend, "It was a big relief for me and I'm sure for them as well, but I was being a little bit selfish that day and I sure was glad to see them. It felt like my family'd come home."
Sergeant Spurgeon is unsure of how long the rest of his stay at Walter Reed will be. He says the doctors there are outstanding and their main concern is that the sight in his eye doesn't get any worse.
