Leadership Oneida County Submitted: 11/17/2009
RHINELANDER - Last month, the University of Wisconsin-Extension and the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce began a 9-month series of day-long meetings.

The program is called Leadership Oneida County. And it's all in an effort to promote local leaders. This month's topic focuses on government and law enforcement.

Several adults from the community listened to various panels discuss county government, law enforcement agencies, and challenges local governments may face in the future.

Those participating also toured the Oneida County Jail as well as the County Courthouse.

Student Administrator Toni Nelson of Explorer's Guide Maritime Training says she has enjoyed expanding her knowledge. "If you actually get involved and see how things are actually done, it starts to make sense and you can make informed decisions, and you can be a helpful part of the community."

Nelson says she's been able to apply what she's learned to her current position and teach students about how they can make a difference.

In May, the program will end with a graduation ceremony. Members are also required to complete a community project at that time. The next meeting will be held on December 15th.
