RHINELANDER - A year from this Monday voters in the 7th Congressional district will decide who will represent them in Washington.
Republican candidate Sean Duffy is running against incumbent Dave Obey, a Democrat who's held his position for over 40 years.
Duffy is currently the District Attorney in Ashland County.
Thursday night he was in Rhinelander campaigning for his run at the 7th Congressional seat.
Duffy held a meet and greet with people at the Best Western Claridge Inn.
He then sat down for a round table session to talk about hot topics such as healthcare.
Duffy says in his run for Congress he wants to make sure fiscal responsibility is accounted for.
He says his goal is to create jobs without government spending.
Duffy says creating more debt is not the answer.
He tells Newswatch 12, "I'm concerned about the debt that we're going to pass on to the next generation. And unless we take the same kind of principles that we apply in our homes as good Wisconsin folks and apply those to government--we're going to leave the next generation with a massive debt and a massive mess."
Duffy says he also wants to protect the free market and small businesses.
He also says he is not in favor of a government takeover of healthcare and believes their are common sense approaches that will reduce cost and increase access.
Dave Obey is a Democrat from Wausau.
Obey currently serves as Chairman for both the House Appropriations Committee and the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations.
He began serving as Congressman in 1969.
